Wayne Shorter Inspires

1) Kennedy Center Honoree 2018

Wayne Shorter is a 10-time Grammy Award-winning jazz saxophonist, who expressed surprise when chosen for the honor. He has collaborated with several top musicians, including Herbie Hancock and Carlos Santana.

“I’m one of the few who stayed in the front trenches, stayed in the struggle to inspire people. Some people may have wanted to give me an award for effort. This award is cutting through all the politics and all of that,” Wayne Shorter adds. “I’ll stay in the trenches with the artists. I’m not getting all up at arms about somebody from the White House possibly being there.”

Shorter practices Nichiren Buddhism as taught in the organization Soka Gakkai International. Two years ago, Shorter joined fellow jazz giant and Buddhist Herbie Hancock in writing an open letter to young artists, that appeared in Lion’s Roar.

The Kennedy Center Honors will be held in Washington, D.C. on December 2nd, and broadcast on CBS on December 26th.

2) Eamon Project

Eamon includes an original graphic novel, a cosmic-heroic odyssey written by Wayne Shorter with help from screenwriter Monica Sly, and featuring art by Randy DuBurke, along with three discs of new music.

Art from the graphic novel ‘Emanon’ by Randy DuBurke.

Recorded with his trusty quartet consisting of Danilo Perez (piano), John Patitucci (bass) and Brian Blade (drums) augmented by the 34-piece Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Emanon is a physical-only release that will be available in two versions; a Standard Edition that packages 3x CDs with the graphic novel, and a Deluxe Edition that packages 3x 180-gram vinyl LPs and 3x CDs with the graphic novel enclosed in a beautiful hardcover slipcase.

Emanon will be released on August 24 and is available for preorder through Blue Note and Amazon.

Wayne Shorter – Zero Gravity

I love the spiritual muse contained in the music that Wayne Shorter composes and performs. His visionary role in jazz offers us a unique portal into an ever-expanding collective consciousness.

I made a pledge towards the 2014 documentary film, Wayne Shorter, Zero Gravity. It is a music  journey I have longed to see unfold from the source and his closest musical friends such as Carlos Santana and Herbie Hancock.

I then discovered that the Wayne Shorter documentary is now 100%  funded. I am proud to play a minor role in helping this enriching film extend our musical heritage.

Here is the first trailer clip which undoubtedly will ebb and flow by the time the film is released in 2014.

Mr. Wayne Shorter – Composer and Saxophonist

Mr. Wayne Shorter as Carlos Santana lovingly calls him turns 80 years young this year on August 25th. I awoke this morning thinking about his brilliant legacy of jazz compositions and performances.

It’s going to be a rewarding year for us with Mr. Wayne Shorter.  I want to share two recent announcements about his career that I am truly excited about. The common chord struck in these events sounded by The Wayne Shorter Quartet.

1) Newport Jazz Festival 2013

Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration

Wayne Shorter will be honored at the 59th annual Newport Jazz Festival this year on Saturday August 3rd. There will be an 80th birthday celebration for him. Wayne Shorter will appear with his stunning quartet that includes Danilo Perez (pianist), John Pattituci (bassist),  and Brian Blade (drummer). There will also be guest stars and friends playing which includes his close friend Herbie Hancock.

2) The Wayne Shorter Quartet – Without A Net

The Wayne Shorter Quartet recording Without A Net was first brought to my attention by the NPR Jazz blog, A Blog Supreme.  It is highlighted that consensus will prove Without A Net as top of the 15 jazz albums to look out for in 2013. We are getting closer to the actual drop date of that recording, February 5th. I hope you feel the electricity for the eminent release of Without A Net.

On February 1, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Quartet will perform four compositions by Shorter alongside works by Beethoven and Ives at Carnegie Hall.

Without A Net is a 9-track musical thrill ride that consists of live recordings from the Wayne Shorter Quartet’s European tour in late 2011, the one exception being the 23-minute tone poem “Pegasus” which features the quartet with The Imani Winds recorded at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The album features six new Shorter compositions, as well as new versions of his tunes “Orbits” (from Miles DavisMiles Smiles album) and “Plaza Real” (from the Weather Report album Procession). The quartet also reinvents the title song from the 1933 musical film Flying Down To Rio, which film buffs know as the first on-screen pairing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Special Edition eBook 2013: Power, Passion and Beauty – The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra

I am pleased to share with my readership a special edition eBook by friend and renowned music journalist  Walter Kolosky. Walter is the subject matter authority when it comes to John McLaughlin and jazz-rock fusion.

His book, Power, Passion and Beauty explores the evolution of the classic jazz-rock fusion group, The Mahavishnu Orchestra. It is authored with an intense desire that bathes us in the light of its inner mounting flame.

I am a longtime fan of The Mahavishnu Orchestra and John McLaughlin. I was fortunate to see The Mahavishnu Orchestra live in 1973. It just so happens that 1973 is the starting point for Walter’s book as well 🙂

I am enthused that Walter has significantly revised his book to include recent interviews with Chick Corea, Steve Howe and Carlos Santana that are woven throughout the eBook tapestry. I am honored to have played a minor role in connecting Carlos Santana and Walter Kolosky for this valuable eBook.

Walter Kolosky: I thank Ed Jennings for his help in obtaining the interview with Carlos Santana.

I urge you to visit Walter Kolosky’s Website where you can order the eBook edition that best suits the device you read with these days. I also suggest that you view the special slide show that Walter has created to go with the eBook.  I chose the Apple iBooks edition so that I can read it on my iPhone.

What a totally cool and worthwhile music eBook! 🙂
