Where’s My Mule? – In New Haven, CT

Last night my brother-in-law and I renewed our tradition of seeing Gov’t. Mule in concert. This was the 6th time we’ve witnessed the Mule and they never, ever disappoint. 😉

Truth be told I’ve seen Warren Haynes play guitar 11 times live. Six times with the Mule, three times with the Allman Bros. Band, once with the Grateful Dead and once at the 100 year Salute to the Blues with Gregg Allman.

The concert took place at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven. The converted Palace Theatre allows standing room for general audience down front. I don’t particularly care for the excessive concrete architecture of the venue. The sound is not bad but seating isn’t as comfortable as it once was. But enough about the aesthetics of the venue.

How was Gov’t. Mule you ask? In a word, fantastic! Warren Haynes was in a happy, energetic mood and it showed from the get go.

The concert began with “Where’s My Mule?” which defined the evening’s mood and temperament.  I love watching Warren Haynes play guitar. He is very skillful at his craft.

The band featuring Matt Abts on drums, Jorgen Carlsson bass guitar, Danny Louis on keyboards, trombone and guitar is a tight nucleus.  A fluid jam band with a rare instinctual feel for each other when they play their repertoire.

They were joined periodically by Steve Elson on alto, baritone sax and flute. He created a cool edge to the songs. He drove it forward well, meshing with the Mule as he did.

The Mule played two sets of music. My favorite was the second set. Gov’t. Mule extended the Allman Bros. classic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” with “Kind of Bird” and “I’m A Ram”. That was the shining moment that knocked it out of the park for me.

When Gov’t. Mule released the album, “High & Mighty” followed by “Mighty High” they infused Jamaican Dub and Reggae with their jam band sound. This was a major pivot point for the Mule. I always love when Warren and company honor that tradition. I also enjoyed that they played “Unring the Bell” during the first set.

There is a great Mule Web page at Jam.Buzz with many of the songs hosted on YouTube. Thanks Steve Roche!

Tonight , 10/29 the Mule will do their annual Halloween, Mule-O-Ween show in Albany, NY. Warren asked the audience how many of you are coming. He got a favorable response to that question. This year’s Halloween classic features the music of Traffic. I know that will be bitchin’ as I saw them perform “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” three years ago at Ives Park in Danbury. If you’re going you are in for a trick or treat.

I now have two Mule 2016 concerts to download from Mule Tracks, Cool!

Whole Lotta Warren Haynes Going On!

Warren Haynes is one of the most versatile musicians in popular music today. He is equally at home playing with The Allman Bros., The Grateful Dead and his own band Gov’t. Mule. He excels at jamming in so many genres.

Warren Haynes is readying his third “solo” album for release on July 24th. I find the designation solo album misleading because the recording features Railroad Earth extensively throughout the tracks. I prefer to call Ashes and Dust a collaboration.

If you have ever seen Warren Haynes perform live you know he is open to many inputs.  He is inviting and inclusive with everyone he performs with.

Also bringing their talents to Ashes and Dust is the vibrant artist Grace Potter, who joins Haynes for the only duet on the album on “Gold Dust Woman”.  The album additionally features singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin and harmonica player Mickey Raphael who each make an appearance on “Wanderlust.” Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones play on “Spots of Time,” a song written by Haynes and Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead.

I am looking forward to owning this album and have included the first track featured on Sound Cloud, “Spots of Time”.

But wait to add icing to the cake, Warren Haynes and Railroad Earth were filmed performing on PBS Front and Center. Check your local PBS programming guides to catch this superb concert starting in June.

I am looking forward to Warren Haynes appearing at The Gathering of the Vibes 20th Anniversary Special this summer in my backyard here in Bridgeport, CT.

Love my Vibe Tribe can’t wait to hang with y’all again 🙂

In Memory of Brian Farmer

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brian Farmer. To me he will always be the heart and soul of Gov’t. Mule.

He was a vibrant character, dedicated to his craft as the road and equipment manager for The Mule. He was a focused guitar tech and incredible buddy with Warren Haynes.

I have two videos I want to share with you about Brian.

The first is a video of Brian Farmer participating with Gov’t. Mule in the song, “Don’t Step On The Grass Sam” by Steppenwolf. We saw Brian do this with The Mule at the Ives in Danbury a few years back. It really made the evening for us.

The second video is a beautiful moving tribute to Brian Farmer performed at Bob Weir‘s TRI Studios. You can feel Warren’s heart breaking as he plays “I Know You Rider”

I take comfort that the soul ascends and that Brian Farmer has joined Rock and Roll Heaven.

Rest in Peace, Brian Farmer. We miss you dearly. #ThankYouFarmer

“He was a close friend, a devoted worker, and a lover of life,” says Warren Haynes. “We traveled around the world together and shared many experiences-mostly while laughing. He will be missed by a huge circle of friends and family.”

Exciting Santana News!

Rod Stewart and Santana Live In Concert

Last year Santana conducted an East Coast tour with The Allman Brothers. We saw that event twice, once in New Jersey at the PAC and next in Hartford. It was a very satisfying gig with Carlos Santana jamming with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks.

This year Santana is teaming up with Rod Stewart for a series of shows called The Voice, The Guitar, The Songs which will cover the U.S. and Canada markets.

I like the two superstars on one card. Rod Stewart is the first rock headline vocalist I ever saw at The Fillmore East way back in 1969. Rod Stewart appeared as the lead singer for The Jeff Beck Group. I loved the contrast of Rod Stewart ever the dandy set against two excellent guitarists, Jeff Beck and Ron Wood.

I have been eager to see Rod Stewart perform live with a stellar guitarist. I trust Rod Stewart will collaborate with Carlos Santana.

Cover Art, Release Date for Corazon

I love the art and graphic design that accents Santana’s recordings.  I wrote about Santana Art and Artists in 2012. The vibrant electric colors are strikingly evident on the forthcoming Corazon recording.

The concept for Corazon was conceived and designed by Boa Mistura, an art collective based in Madrid, Spain that works primarily on public art pieces, developing projects in South Africa, Norway, Berlin, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. For more information visit Boa Mistura’s Web site.

The Corazon album release date is May 6th on the RCA/SONY LATIN IBERIA Label.

Do I Look Worried – Tedeschi Trucks Band

I was watching CBS This Morning Saturday Edition. Anthony Mason, the co-host mentioned that the musical guest would be the Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB). I stay tuned in to watch TTB do, “Do I Look Worried” from their latest album Made Up Mind.

I’ve owned Made Up Mind since it was released on August 20, 2013. I play it from time to time. I was appreciating the fact that TTB is still working this recording as part of their appearances. Today’s performance solidified the recording in the music of our heart.

The song “Do I Look Worried” was written with John Leventhal who is married to Rosanne Cash. John Leventhal is an excellent songwriter, guitarist and arranger. He plays a principal role in the success of Rosanne Cash’s latest hit recording, The River & The Thread. Derek Trucks returns the favor to John Leventhal by playing on their track, “World of Strange Design”.

Gov’t. Mule’s “Shout” Recording Dropped 9/24, Time To Pick It Up ;)

There are very few bands that can light me up like Gov’t. Mule does. Their music reaches way inside the inner core of the music of our heart.  I think I will buy a copy of Shout today. I love what I am hearing on Spotify, it’s kicking!

Shout, Forthcoming Studio Album From Gov’t Mule

Gov’t Mule continues to flourish creating innovative approaches to the music they produce and do. The Mule takes collective risks as a jam band experimenting and reinventing their music with clever twists. This was clear at the June 2nd Mule concert I saw at the Charles Ives Center in Danbury. This concert was the launch site for the “Prepare to Shout Tour”. Gov’t Mule is coming back to Connecticut to play the Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport on Saturday July 27th.

Copyright Gov’t Mule 2013

Gov’t Mule announced on 7/11 there will be a new studio album coming out on September 24th entitled Shout. Gov’t Mule has signed with Blue Note Records and this will be their first studio recording in four years. It is a double album.

The first disc has 11 new songs . Eight of the tracks were recorded here in Connecticut at Carriage House Studios in Stamford. Longtime co-producer/engineer Gordie Johnson co-produced four of those songs with Warren Haynes.

The second disc is a bonus disc featuring an all-star lineup of vocalists interpreting The Mule’s new songs. Special guests Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Ben Harper, Toots Hibbert, Glenn Hughes, Jim James, Myles Kennedy, Dave Matthews, Grace Potter, Vintage Trouble’s Ty Taylor and Steve Winwood

“The Mule holds a unique and lofty berth. They have roots that run real deep — drawing from the entire history of rock ‘n’ roll going all the way back to Robert Johnson and the Delta,” noted Blue Note Records’ President Don Was. “Yet, despite their mastery of past idioms, they have managed to rearrange those elements into a whole new thing. On this new album, they’ve elevated their songwriting, playing, and production values to a whole new plateau. It’s gonna blow people’s minds.”

Michael Franti and Spearhead – I’m Alive

Michael Franti is one of our favorite artists. We have seen him live twice in concert and he enlivened everyone in the concert hall . His jubilant energy is infectious.

@mountainjam @warrenhaynes hangin’ with the Haynes’s Stefani Warren and child.

I am psyched that Micheal Franti and Spearhead have announced a new album, All People that drops on July 30th. They will be touring in support of that new release.

All People is about the beauty of diversity, being your authentic self in a crazy world and the infinite power of love,” added Franti. “For everyone that’s been with us for days or decades, I really appreciate the love that you’ve given us.  The music is for you and you inspire us.” Franti’s impressive career spans decades, albums and many achievements. The singer, poet and activist has amassed an extensive and rabid fan base, and draws sell-out crowds by virtue of his electrifying live shows.

They have announced a local club date on Tuesday September  at Toad’s Place in New Haven. I am eager to see them in that setting. The first video “I’m Alive (Life Sounds Like)” gets you up and moving.
