Dead & Company Is Going To Be Way Cool!

I am pleased to learn that John Mayer, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann have formed the next evolution of The Grateful Dead. They will be known as Dead & Company.

They will be joined by Oteil Burbridge on bass and Jeff Chimenti on keyboards. Such an awesome nucleus of talent, I really must say.

The Dead & Company will start the tour on Halloween night at the Madison Square Garden Arena. The Madison Square Garden event will not be Dead & Company’s only show as Bob Weir confirmed they are in talks to book additional dates.

I respect how John Mayer carries it forward with the Dead and their music. He is the catalyst for The Dead’s raison d’etre.

I’m deeply excited and energized to be joining some of the Grateful Dead guys in the band Dead & Company. All I’ve really wanted to do in life is play deep, real music – and this is some of the deepest and realest there is. It’s also some of the most satisfying to play as a musician. It’s going to be a challenge and a joy to help make those waves that people can ride wherever they want it to take them. This adventure reminds me a lot of the one I had with the Trio, exactly a decade ago, when I took a break from recording what would be Continuum. Going back to “pure” playing experiences is what keeps the creativity in my own work flowing. I’ve followed the guitar wherever it pointed, and it’s never steered me wrong. I hope you’ll ride along with me, because we’re going to have some fun. Thanks for always letting me go where the spirit takes me…

Bob Weir’s quote about Dead & Company is quite appropriate.

“Those songs weren’t done with us. It was a matter of who wanted to get back out on the road and keep doing it.”

Here is John Mayer performing Althea with Bob Weir, Jim Keltner (drums) and Sean Hurley (bass).

Superorganism – Mickey Hart Band

Freshly announced is the Mickey Hart BandSuperorganism album and 2013 tour. Designed to celebrate Mickey Hart’s 70th birthday ( the album will once again feature lyrics from Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, as well as a number of special guest musicians, who will be appearing at various dates along the Superorganism 2013 tour run.

Superorganism will drop on August 13th. The Mickey Hart Band will make a stop in my birth city, Norwalk, Connecticut on Friday August 16th at the Norwalk Concert Hall. I have submitted a request to become a Stellar Crew, Mickey Hart Official Street Team Member.

So looking forward to this music concert experience.

Mickey Hart will perform with an EEG cap on his while he plays the sounds of his brain. For an example of how this works, check out the video below of Hart’s talk at the AARP convention in New Orleans last November. I am a big believer and supporter of Mickey’s work with music and neurology. Music has healing powers.

Visit the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function for more information on this important effort.

Jefferson Starship – Blows Against The Empire

When I think of the music of Jefferson Starship, I am transported back to their premier recording, Blows Against the Empire (November, 1970). It echoes in my head and heart with a unique resonance these many years later.

I especially love the track, “Have You Seen The Stars Tonite”. I can visualize being on a deck in outer space, looking up through a clear glass ceiling floating amidst the stars.

Blows Against The Empire is an amazing blend of science fiction combined with a rich textured musical synergy. One can only imagine what life was like back then in the canyons above San Francisco as members of Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Quicksilver Messenger Service and friends communed and recorded together.

This amalgam of musicians became known as the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Empire.

I purchased today from the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Store the 3 CD set that includes the Blows Against The Empire deluxe edition, the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra CD (the sequel to Blows…) and the bonus Perro CD. When I have received these items and digested the music I will write an update blog post.

Healing Has The Power – The Music Never Stopped

I am a major advocate about the results we receive through spirituality and the healing power of music.I truly believe that music can heal the mind, body and soul. I have been writing a book about this subject for some time now. Its  reassuring to see aggregated momentum building for music therapy in our society.

The benefits of music therapy are at the core of a new film, The Music Never Stopped. The film is based on the true story, “The Last Hippie” by Oliver Sacks. Oliver Sacks is a physician, best-selling author, and professor of neurology and psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center.

“The film is a moving testament not only to the love between a father and his son, but to the miraculous power of music to heal a damaged brain. Remembering music, listening to it or playing it, is entirely in the present, and, while it lasts, it can bridge even the abyss of extreme amnesia or dementia. Music can be more powerful than any drugs.” – Dr. Oliver Sacks

My wife and I were awarded two tickets to the New York première of The Music Never Stopped, which will be shown at the 92nd St Y in New York City on March 16th at 7 p.m. Oliver Sacks, along with Mickey Hart from The Grateful Dead (their music is central to the film) and Jim Kohlberg (the film’s director) will be conducting a Q&A with the audience after the screening.

Proceeds from the film premiere will benefit the groundbreaking research, clinical services and educational programs conducted by the world-renowned Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF).
