TIDAL X Baltimore: Mother’s Day Rally 4 Peace Benefit Concert

This is why I subscribe to TIDAL. They offer meaningful exclusives that touch the music of our heart.

Tune into TIDAL at 8 p.m. E.T. on Sunday, May 10, 2015, for a live audio broadcast of Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL’s Mother’s Day Rally 4 Peace benefit concert. TIDAL will be the exclusive destination to hear this historic live concert — available to subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

Following a month of unrest, the Rally 4 Peace is meant to be a catalyst for pause and reflection after the outpouring of violence that has gripped Baltimore and areas throughout the U.S.

What happened in Baltimore, Maryland was tragic and wrong. Here’s our opportunity to lend assistance to Baltimore and its youth.

Alongside the free hour-long audio stream, TIDAL’s homepage will feature a “match funds” donation button to support local Baltimore youth charities.

TIDAL is also providing the opportunity to support and give to The Baltimore Justice Fund, whose mission it is to end racial discrimination, create schools that are welcoming and safe, reduce the impact of drug addiction and eliminate police brutality in Baltimore. All can donate at http://www.audaciousideas.org/donate/

“I am honored to join Prince in his mission to inspire through the uniting power of music and be able to offer a platform where this moment can be shared globally.  We invite all to experience the music and contribute in their own way to promote peace, tolerance and understanding,” added JAY Z.  “Our prayers go out to Freddie Gray’s family and every family affected by brutality and senseless violence.”

Jay-Z’s #TIDALforALL

Jay-Z has acquired Aspiro, the Swedish music technology company behind the streaming services Tidal and WiMP. There will be a press conference in New York City at 5 p.m. today to relaunch Tidal Music in North America. The company will be renamed TIDALHiFi.

If Forbes sources are to be trusted, the streaming platform under Jay Z will focus on putting the creators in the driving seat, and ensuring they are fairly remunerated for their content.

More on #TIDALforALL at 5 p.m. EST.

Leslie West – Still Climbing

Leslie West has my deep respect for pushing past his physical challenge continuing to record and perform the rock and roll music that he does the best. Later this month, October 28th to be specific, Leslie West’s latest recording, Still Climbing will drop.

The new album features collaborations with rockers like Jonny LangJohnny Winter, Mark Tremonti, Dylan Rose and Dee Snider.

Leslie West’s ‘Still Climbing’ Track Listing

1. ‘Dyin’ Since the Day I Was Born’
2. ‘Busted, Disgusted or Dead’
3. ‘Fade Into You’
4. ‘Not Over You at All’
5. ‘Tales of Woe’
6. ‘Feeling Good’
7. ‘Hatfield or McCoy’
8. ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’
9. ‘Long Red
10. ‘Don’t Ever Let Me Go’
11. ‘Rev Jones Time (Somewhere Over the Rainbow)’

Still Climbing is a sequel to the kick ass album Usual Suspects (2011).  Usual Suspects featured Leslie West playing with Slash, Billy Gibbons, Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, and Joe Bonamassa.

I first discovered Leslie West in 1969 when I was attending radio school in New York City. I was walking to Grand Central Terminal and as I was prone to do I stopped by The Record Hunter on 5th Avenue to look at the record albums displayed in the window. That particular day I saw Leslie West, Mountain and recalled that Scott Muni on WNEW-FM was playing a track from it called “Long Red’. I went inside and bought Leslie West’s solo LP. I played it when I got home and the sound of “Long Red” filled my senses. I’ve loved that song ever since as I melded with the Calliope organ and Leslie West’s gritty vocal.

I was fascinated to learn that “Long Red” has been sampled by rap artist Jay-Z in “99 Problems” as well as in songs by Kanye West and Common. I think that is totally cool.

I am further excited by the fact that Leslie West has rerecorded “Long Red” for Still Climbing with his brother and former Vagrants-mate Larry West on bass!

“It was time for me to let people hear that song the way I do it now,” he explained. “I used a B-3 organ on it again, but this time it has a lot more balls.”

Here is another track from Still Climbing as we eagerly expect the final release. Can’t wait for this album to further rock the music of our heart.

Check out the press release here for more information.

Vinyl Resurgence

Readers of this blog know of my passion for vinyl recordings. I am an avid supporter of Record Store Day as a music blogger and vinyl collector.

Vinyl sales are on the increase. Just about every artist I follow with a new recording planned has a vinyl edition included as part of their product distribution strategy. In many instances the vinyl releases are either 180 gram or 220 gram audiophile grade.

Trends

Vinyl sales in the U.S. are up 33% through June 9th, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a fantastic surge in juxtaposition to the 15% gain through the same week in 2012 and the 18% gain in all of 2012.

Record Store Day 2013 was  the most successful vinyl sales day yet. A total of 244,000 vinyl LPs were sold in the week ending April 21, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the largest one-week sum for vinyl albums since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.

When Third Man Records Production Head Ben Blackwell was asked about the release date for Jay-Z‘s Magna Carta: Holy Grail specialty edition vinyl he stated, “Vinyl plants are all completely at capacity and we are working in the same world as everyone else – so we’re just scraping by to get it out as soon as possible.”

Just a few years back the death of vinyl was being strongly foretold. The sales turnaround serves as vindication for those of us who never stopped believing in the purism of analog sound.

Psyche! Jack White & Jay-Z Further Their Distribution Partnership

Jack White has a custom vinyl pressing plant at Third Man Records in Nashville, Tennesee. Jay-Z is partnering with Jack White to distribute several special edition vinyls through that plant. The specific details of Magna Carta…Holy Grail on vinyl are not available yet.

Jay-Z promoting the trend for vinyl is a testimony to vinyl’s role in music sales. This is a major shot in the arm for the relevance of vinyl in music sales and distribution circles.

According to the News section on the Third Man Records Website:

Third Man has something very special planned for the vinyl edition which will be made available for purchase in the coming weeks. Additionally, we can confirm the song “Open Letter” will be featured as a vinyl exclusive.

Jay-Z tweeted this information yesterday about specialty vinyl editions directly during a Twitter Q&A session.

“Jack White, you know, aside from being a brilliant musician, he has this vinyl store so he makes these special edition vinyls, and we’re gonna put [‘Open Letter’] on the vinyl,” said Jay-Z.”

“It’s in a letter. . . you can play the letter. . . it’s amazing,” Jay-Z told Hot 97 yesterday. “You open the letter, and you can actually play the card.”

This is not the first collaboration on vinyl between Jay-Z and Jack White. The Great Gatsby soundtrack  (which Jay-Z produced) was manufactured and distributed by Third Man Records on gold and platinum vinyl in May.

When I can get to the Nashville Tennesee area I plan to visit Third Man Records. Now that’s what I call a pilgrimage 😉

Buzz Factor: Justin Timberlake vs. David Bowie

I will be curious to see who has more buzz factor with their early morning music drops, David Bowie who did phenomenal this past week with “Where Are We Now?” on his birthday, January 8th, or, Justin Timberlake (Featuring Jay-Z) with “Suit and Tie” at 12:01 am Monday January 14th.

Maybe Justin Bieber knows best 😉

From Justin Timberlake…….

An Open Letter to you (the fans):

I hope this gets to you the right way. It’s the only way I know to do it. Some people may criticize me for the last 3 days. But it was fun, right?? Right?!?! Besides, I’d rather speak directly to all of you. And, who can knock me for having a little bit of fun with it?

Well… No more teasing. Although, it was A LOT of fun. (Did I mention that I’m having fun with this?? Ha!)

*Makes a serious face*

So, here goes:

This year is an exciting one for me. As you probably have heard through the “grapevine,” I’m gearing up for a big 2013.

Back in June of last year, I quietly started working on what is now, my next journey with that thing I love called MUSIC.

The inspiration for this really came out of the blue and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything out of it. I just went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs. It was probably the best time I’ve had in my career… Just creating with no rules and/or end goal in mind and really enjoying the process.

What I came up with is something I couldn’t be more excited about! It is full of inspiration that I grew up listening to and some newfound muses that I’ve discovered along the way.

I’m calling it “The 20/20 Experience,” and it’s coming out this year.

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

That’s all I’m giving you for now… I know, I know! Again, with the teasing!!!

Get ready. This is going to be fun (well, at least it is for me).

Brooklyn In Da House

We’re talking Brooklyn, Jay-Z and the Barclays Center, the Brooklyn Nets. Hov performed eight sold out shows at this fantastic, state of the art venue. I was blown away by the stage design they used for the shows.

I love to see when an artist gives back to his community.

Check out this video from Jay-Z, Where I’m From. Granted it’s a little long but I think you’ll find it invigorating and heart warming.

Jay-Z has also produced infectious music for the soundtrack for the new Jackie Robinson biopic, 42.  Again about Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Dodger’s greatest legend.

And I don’t think Jay-Z is done exciting us yet. Rumor has it that he and Beyonce play a role in the Justin Timberlake video/single, “Suit and Tie” which premiere’s Monday 1/14 at 12:01 a.m. on Astral’s 99.9 Virgin Radio and on iTunes

High on the list of 2013 concerts for the music of our heart is to see a show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Trust me I will be reviewing the events list closely for that to happen 😉

Otis Redding – 70 Years On

Cover of "The Very Best of Otis Redding"
Cover of The Very Best of Otis Redding

Otis Redding is back in the limelight, deservedly so, due to the overnight Internet success of the new music collaboration by Jay-Z and Kayne West, “Otis”. They sample Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” which empowers them both underneath to rap with great aplomb.

Otis Redding

The renewed interest in Otis Redding, the King of Soul prompted me to purchase The Very Best of Otis Redding on Apple iTunes. I lacked an essential Otis Redding digital recording in my music collection. The soulful mastery Otis Redding possess’ is perfectly matched against the backdrop of the Memphis Stax/Volt sound.

I noticed that the city of Macon, Georgia will be honoring their former citizen Otis Redding with a three-day 70th Anniversary celebration September 9-11 of this year. September 9th will be Otis Redding Day. I’d like to attend this event, if possible…

My personal favorite live recording of Otis Redding’s is when he performed his stellar set at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. The electricity and energy of his performance for the love crowd brought down the house that night.
