Boarding House Reach – Jack White

Jack White has announced the release of his eagerly anticipated new album, Boarding House Reach. The 12-time GRAMMY® Award-winner’s third solo LP and first all-new album in nearly four years, Boarding House Reach will arrive everywhere on Friday, March 23.

Written and conceived while holed up in a spartan apartment with no outside distractions, Jack replicated the identical environment and used the same gear as when he was a 15-year-old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer, and the most basic of instrumentation) to pen sketches of the album’s songs. The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain — crunching rock ‘n’ roll, electro and hard funk, proto-punk, hip-hop, gospel blues, and even country — all remapped and born anew to fit White’s matchless vision and sense of restless experimentation.

I was very moved by Jack White’s performance last night. My interpretation of his raw emotions was that he was thinking about Meg. An honest expression of the solo acoustic medley of White Stripes hits “Love Is the Truth” and “You’ve Got Her in Your Pocket”.

Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016

Jack White announces a career-spanning new release: Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016, out September 9 on double CD, double LP, and digitally via Third Man/Columbia. It’s a 26-track compilation that features album tracks, B-sides, and alternate takes of songs by the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, as well as selections from White’s solo catalog. Acoustic Recordings also includes the unreleased White Stripes song “City Lights.”

The song was originally written for  The White Stripes album, Get Behind Me Satan, but wasn’t finished until this year. According to a press release, “The track is the first new, worldwide commercially released White Stripes song since 2008.”

Acoustic Recordings also comes with liner notes by noted music journalist, Greil Marcus. The track list is in chronological order.

This is another must have for my collection.

Third Man Books Announces Definitive Book About The Stooges As Told By Iggy Pop

Jack White’s publishing company, Third Man Books will release a much-anticipated book, TOTAL CHAOS: The Story of The Stooges / As Told By Iggy Pop sometime this winter.

It was a rare privilege to sit with Iggy as he downloaded the story of The Stooges. He’s an incredible storyteller with a fantastic memory and a great sense of humor, and he held nothing back. The Stooges were pioneers in sound, look, and live presentation, and along the way invented a genre-punk rock-and influenced countless others that followed. There was no precedent in rock music for what they did. They’re definitely the only group in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who started out playing an amplified Waring blender, a vacuum cleaner, spring water bottles and a 200 gallon oil drum.Jeff Gold, Author of 101 Essential Rock Records

The author team Jeff Gold, Johan Kugelberg and editor/contributor Jon Savage are among the most respected music authors and historians working today. Total Chaos will also feature contributions from Jack White, Joan Jett, Johnny Marr and Third Man’s Ben Blackwell. Now that’s what I call curation!

I can’t wait to get my hands on this essential rock book! Where is the pre-order link, Third Man Books? 😉

Jack White’s Innovative Third Man Books Publishing Imprint

I tip my hat once more to Jack White’s innovative business sense as he forges and casts the Third Man Books publishing imprint. His creative sense builds a fresh dimensional interpretation as we learn to respect and interact with printed matter.

Language LessonsVolume 1 is a 321 page hardbound book co-edited by Third Man’s Ben Swank and Chet Weise, a poet, musician and founder of the Nashville literary event, Poetry Sucks. The book is packed with new pieces from more than 20 acclaimed authors including Pulitzer Prize nominee in fiction Dale Ray Phillips; C.D. Wright, a National Book Award Finalist and National Book Critics Circle winner in poetry; and Adrian Matejka, a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist in poetry. Punk godfathers Richard Hell and Tav Falco also contributed non-fiction pieces.

As for the music portion of the set, the two vinyl LPs boast previously unheard material ranging from blues and pop to jazz and psychedelic-punk, courtesy of an eclectic group of artists like William Tyler, Destruction Unit, Ken Vandermark and Paul “Wine” Jones.

Each Language Lessons set will also include five frameable posters combining poems by Weise, Wright, Frank Stanford, Brian Barker and Jake Adam York with original art by former Big Boys guitarist Tim Kerr, former Hate comics illustrator Jim Blanchard, folk artist Butch Anthony and more.

Language Lessons is now available for pre-order over on the Third Man website.

Third Man Books will preview Language Lessons, Volume 1 on Saturday, July 26th during the Newport Folk Festival, where Jack White is also a headliner. The event will feature readings from Weise and other contributors Zachary Schomburg, Joshua Marie Wilkinson, Janaka Stucky, Sampson Starkweather, Paige Taggart and Kendra Decolo.

Jack White sets a record for vinyl sales as his album, Lazaretto makes its debut on top of this week’s Billboard albums chart.

Of the 138,000 copies of Lazaretto that White sold, 40,000 were in the vinyl format. According to Billboard, that’s the best sales week for a vinyl album since Billboard began using SoundScan to track sales in 1991.
