Teach Your Children Graham Nash (2018)

This video is a collaboration between Graham Nash and celebrated filmmaker and animator Jeff Scher. The imagery frames the youth-led liberal activism of 2018 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and Peace demonstrations of the 1960’s, providing a powerful visual aid to Graham Nash’s relevant-as-ever appeal to teach not only our children but also our parents well.

“I wrote Teach Your Children because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well. I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting.” – Graham Nash (2018)

The Lantern Tour: Concerts for Migrants and Refugee

Music continues to fight to defeat social injustice.

The Lantern Tour: Concerts for Migrants and Refugees

The Lantern Tour brings together art and advocacy to stand with families seeking safety at the U.S. border and the nightmare that has become their existence. From separating families to detaining them to making it harder for people to claim asylum, migrant and refugee families – including children – are under attack by the Trump administration. The Women’s Refugee Commission is at the front lines – at the border and in detention centers – to protect the rights and lives of women and children fleeing danger and crisis. The concerts will feature an evening of acoustic music by legends in the music industry that will allow us all to unite our voices in song and solidarity. Proceeds will help the Women’s Refugee Commission.

Nashville and New York tickets go on sale this Thursday July 26th
D.C., Collingswood, and Boston tickets go on sale this Friday, July 27th

The musicians appearing will vary at each show on the tour.

101 Essential Rock Records

The music coffee table book that you will want to sink your teeth into is 101 Essential Rock Records, The Golden Age of Vinyl From The Beatles by Jeff Gold.

This volume is a tribute to the vinyl album and celebrates 101 of rock’s most influential records — from The Beatles’ 1963 début Please Please Me — through the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks (1977.)

The book also features contribution writings from musicians Devendra Banhart, David Bowie, Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Nels Cline (Wilco), Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Graham Nash, and Suzanne Vega.

The book documents a period in recorded music where vinyl ruled with commanding authority. I love that it was a time when I was a rabid music collector and listener. I am proud to say that I own 60 of the 101 essential rock records 🙂 The book brings back the feelings of going to the record store to buy the rare cover edition of Blind Faith sold to me in a brown paper bag.

Jeff Gold is my new hero. He writes with such passion and conviction. It’s no wonder he is profiled by Rolling Stone as one of five “top collectors of high-end music memorabilia”.

Gold owns the music collectibles website Recordmecca.com, and writes about topics of interest to collectors on its associated blog. By the way the Web site is awesome!

This is a book you will want to squirrel away quality reading and listening time with as you explore the essential records.

There is a companion 101 Essential Rock Records Web site where you can see full sample pages of the four page spreads of the respective albums.

So here is the list in chronological order of the 101 Essential Rock Records, see how many you can check off 😉

Long May You Run – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

I have seen various combinations of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Live!

1) It started with Neil Young for free at the Oakdale in Wallingford, Ct.

The first act was the play Greendale. Then Neil Young & Crazy Horse rocked the house with a live set that had my blood pumping for more.

2) The next concert event was Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Freedom Tour at Mohegan Sun. It was all about Living With War as the centerpiece of that memorable evening.

3) The next combination was David Crosby & Graham Nash in Stamford, Ct. This  was broadcast live from The Palace Theater over HDnet. It was also captured on audio and DVD. I loved having seen a concert live that was done that way, very well staged, with impeccable timing and polished performances.

4) We next saw Crosby, Stills and Nash open for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in Hartford at the Comcast Theatre outside from the lawn on the hill. Great to see them under the stars at night.

5) The next event was Stephen Stills for free at the Wolf’s Den at Mohegan Sun Casino. Impressive solo concert by Mr. Stills.

6) The latest concert was Neil Young & Crazy Horse at the Webster in Bridgeport, Ct. in late 2012. The Patti Smith opened for them. That evening was filmed for a future audio and DVD experience 😉

So the last two options remaining are for us to see Graham Nash and David Crosby as individual solo artists and Stephen Stills and Neil Young together.

I love these guys. They are peace, harmony, folk and universal love.

Long May You Run, one and all!

Graham Nash on the Howard Stern Show

It was a total buzz to catch Graham Nash on the Howard Stern Show this morning. It is electrifying when Howard is on his interview game, especially if he is enamored with a musician. The intimate sense that comes across the satellite is magnetic and captivating.

Copyright Howard Stern Show 2013

Graham Nash was in the studio promoting his new book, Wild TalesThe connection between Graham and Howard was crisp. I liked how open, nonchalant, and free ranging Graham Nash was about his life.

I learned a lot this morning about Graham Nash and his circle of famous musician friends. Many of whom I have come admire and respect these many decades. I can’t wait to hear the audio book of Wild Tales that Graham Nash narrates.

Be sure to visit HowardStern.com to learn Song by Song with Graham Nash and why Graham Nash is a Zelig.

WILD TALES by Graham Nash

The aging rockers autobiography series continues with Wild Tales by Graham Nash. The book will be released on September 17, 2013 in various media options, hardcover (Crown Archetype), audiobook CD (Random House Audio), amazon Kindle, Nook Book (eBook) and Apple iBook. (The ebook edition from various suppliers includes 4 videos, 34 audio clips, and 11 additional photos from Graham Nash’s personal collection. Audio and video content does not play on all reading devices. Check your user manual for details.

The amazon listing appears to be confused about Wild Tales in paperback as they show a “used book” listing from 1974, 64 pages  in length from Warner Brothers Publications. It was illustrated by Joni Mitchell. “Wild Tales” is also the name of Graham Nash’s late 1973 solo album.

Traditionally paperback releases follow hardcover publication after a certain “established timeframe”.

I am considering attending his Barnes & Noble book signing appearance in New York City on September 23rd if we can make it down to the E. 17th Street store that evening.

For those of you who are interested in more pictures and details about Graham Nash’s forthcoming book, I suggest that you read the Daily News Review by Sherryl Connelly. She dishes the dirt I’ll warn you in advance 😉

CSN 2012

Crosby, Stills and Nash are incorporating multimedia more by filming their live concerts. Last month they released, CSN 2012 on DVD/CD and Blu-Ray/CD. I’m thinking the positive results Crosby-Nash achieved with their Crosby-Nash: In Concert (which we saw filmed) prompted CSN to release more concert video packaging.

I have seen various permeation’s of the band, hybrid and solo over the years,  Crosby, Stills and Nash, Crosby-Nash, Stephen Stills, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Neil Young (with Crazy Horse). Each was an exciting and warm experience. I just love how soothing their harmonies are.

I float back in time to 1969 when the folk rock supergroup first appeared. Their classic first album has never been bettered

I’m thankful for a recorded concert of Crosby, Stills and Nash from their 2012 tour. When I want to hear and see them live again they are as close as my video entertainment system. 🙂

Jefferson Starship – Blows Against The Empire

When I think of the music of Jefferson Starship, I am transported back to their premier recording, Blows Against the Empire (November, 1970). It echoes in my head and heart with a unique resonance these many years later.

I especially love the track, “Have You Seen The Stars Tonite”. I can visualize being on a deck in outer space, looking up through a clear glass ceiling floating amidst the stars.

Blows Against The Empire is an amazing blend of science fiction combined with a rich textured musical synergy. One can only imagine what life was like back then in the canyons above San Francisco as members of Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Quicksilver Messenger Service and friends communed and recorded together.

This amalgam of musicians became known as the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Empire.

I purchased today from the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Store the 3 CD set that includes the Blows Against The Empire deluxe edition, the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra CD (the sequel to Blows…) and the bonus Perro CD. When I have received these items and digested the music I will write an update blog post.

David Crosby and Graham Nash, Live on HDNet

Rosemary and I enjoyed a lovely evening last night at the Palace Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut with David Crosby & Graham Nash and their eclectic band. We felt like we had been invited into the living room of two longtime friends.

The concert was broadcast live on HDNet. It was three hours of some of the best music, vocal harmonies and musicianship we ever saw in person.

Here is the autographed set list 😉
