Warren Haynes is one of the most versatile musicians in popular music today. He is equally at home playing with The Allman Bros., The Grateful Dead and his own band Gov’t. Mule. He excels at jamming in so many genres.
Warren Haynes is readying his third “solo” album for release on July 24th. I find the designation solo album misleading because the recording features Railroad Earth extensively throughout the tracks. I prefer to call Ashes and Dust a collaboration.
If you have ever seen Warren Haynes perform live you know he is open to many inputs. He is inviting and inclusive with everyone he performs with.
Also bringing their talents to Ashes and Dust is the vibrant artist Grace Potter, who joins Haynes for the only duet on the album on “Gold Dust Woman”. The album additionally features singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin and harmonica player Mickey Raphael who each make an appearance on “Wanderlust.” Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones play on “Spots of Time,” a song written by Haynes and Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead.
I am looking forward to owning this album and have included the first track featured on Sound Cloud, “Spots of Time”.
But wait to add icing to the cake, Warren Haynes and Railroad Earth were filmed performing on PBS Front and Center. Check your local PBS programming guides to catch this superb concert starting in June.
I am looking forward to Warren Haynes appearing at The Gathering of the Vibes 20th Anniversary Special this summer in my backyard here in Bridgeport, CT.
Love my Vibe Tribe can’t wait to hang with y’all again 🙂
The Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. The Vibe Tribe has an exciting “initial schedule” to look forward to in 2015 in Bridgeport at Seaside Park. The festival takes place July 30-August 2, 2015.
I am stoked for Wilco, The String Cheese Incident, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Billy & The Kids.
Can’t wait to see who else gets added to this event!
The World Peace Prayer Ceremony is a global celebration of the oneness of life and the human family. With united hearts and minds, participants of the Ceremony are invited to invoke prayers for peace to prevail in the countries and regions of the world. It is a moving ceremonial ritual rising above national boundaries, religion and ideologies giving expression to the universal wish for peace and harmony which lies at the core of every human heart.
Next month in Bridgeport, Ct. The Gathering of the Vibes will take place. This will be the 19th year for GOTV. I have attended three times thus far, 2007, 2009 and 2010. The festival is 20 minutes from the house. We love The Vibes!
I am planning to attend again in 2014. In reviewing the schedule for 2014 my present thinking is to attend Saturday August 2 and Sunday August 3. I do hope I follow through on that commitment 😉
I don’t know about you but I love to crowdfund. It affords the loyal fan who is a passionate patrons of the arts the opportunity to invest in the artist projects we believe in! Crowdfunding liberates the music for those who cherish it the most artist and fan.
Rusted Root is a very cool band. They have a great energy that surrounds them. I first saw Rusted Root twelve years ago as the opening act for Santana at the Meadows in Hartford, Ct. It was a lovely summer evening and they created a fine groove that evening for the crowd. They invited fans to stop by their merch table after their set to talk, to sign and sell their music. I regret that I didn’t venture out to meet them.
But life offers us second chances. As luck would have it I am arranging a telephone interview with Rusted Root next week. The impetus for our discussion is to learn more about the band, their music and help to promote their IndieGoGo crowdfund project.
Navigate over to the Rusted Root IndieGoGo Page and see if there is something you’d like for your collection or to help them out with so they can make that next great recording.
Gov’t Mule continues to flourish creating innovative approaches to the music they produce and do. The Mule takes collective risks as a jam band experimenting and reinventing their music with clever twists. This was clear at the June 2nd Mule concert I saw at the Charles Ives Center in Danbury. This concert was the launch site for the “Prepare to Shout Tour”. Gov’t Mule is coming back to Connecticut to play the Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport on Saturday July 27th.
Gov’t Mule announced on 7/11 there will be a new studio album coming out on September 24th entitled Shout. Gov’t Mule has signed with Blue Note Records and this will be their first studio recording in four years. It is a double album.
The first disc has 11 new songs . Eight of the tracks were recorded here in Connecticut at Carriage House Studios in Stamford. Longtime co-producer/engineer Gordie Johnson co-produced four of those songs with Warren Haynes.
“The Mule holds a unique and lofty berth. They have roots that run real deep — drawing from the entire history of rock ‘n’ roll going all the way back to Robert Johnson and the Delta,” noted Blue Note Records’ President Don Was. “Yet, despite their mastery of past idioms, they have managed to rearrange those elements into a whole new thing. On this new album, they’ve elevated their songwriting, playing, and production values to a whole new plateau. It’s gonna blow people’s minds.”

When we search within our souls and find that brave spot it summons the strength to conquer our fears. Levon Helm offers us an example of a musical soul guiding us to bravery in a brand new film, Ain’t In It For My Health.
Director Jacob Hatley’s intimate documentary finds Mr. Helm at home in Woodstock, NY, in the midst of creating his first studio album in 25 years. Shot during the course of two-plus years, this highly anticipated film focuses in on the four-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member after his 2007 comeback album, Dirt Farmer, brought him back to the spotlight.
The movie premiered last night at a special “Midnight Ramble” at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. It was followed by a barbecue dinner and afterwards the Dirt Farmer Band (including Larry Campbell, Amy Helm and Teresa Williams) performed live.
The film will then have a limited run at theaters in the U.S.. I hope we can view it in Greenwich Village NYC at the Cinema Village site.
My wife and I were fortunate to see The Levon Helm Band perform at the Gathering of the Vibes in 2009. Here is one of the songs from that evening set featuring Levon playing mandolin.
He was so brave for all of us that night and he continues to be in the music of our heart.
I have had the good fortune to see Buddy Guy perform live five times in my life. I have seen him at Toads Place with John Mayer, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert with Jeff Beck(2009), the 200 Year Salute to the Blues at Radio City Music Hall(2003) and Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport (twice). He is always the consistent showman who possesses this incredible knack of coaxing the blues out of his polka dot guitar.
It has been an exciting and rewarding time for Buddy Guy these past few months. He received the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors on December 2nd, 2012. It was a well deserved recognition for one of our national treasures.
Here is the CBS video segment about the Buddy Guy tribute in its entirety.
At age 76 Buddy Guy shows no signs of slowing down. If anything he has picked up momentum. He is playing his 16 night annual Winter residency at his Buddy Guy Legends Club in Chicago right now.
Last year Buddy Guy released a biography co-authored with David Ritz. David Ritz has written some great music biographies about B.B. King, Ray Charles to name a few. I ordered this item as my new Audible audio book to listen to in the car.
Buddy Guy Live At Legends
Buddy Guy released last month a live audio CD of a past Winter residency that was recorded at his old Legends Club in January 2010. It also includes as a bonus three studio tracks. I’m listening to this on Spotify 😉
He appeared on the David Letterman Show last night with his band to promote that recording. He performed “Damn Right I Got The Blues“.
