Plenty afoot with Little Feat!

I enjoy the magic Little Feat shows. I have seen them perform five times in the past three decades (the last time being on the card with Gov’t Mule where they jammed in each others set). I love the sound and collective energy they bring to the stage. I feel their music as gumbo sound. Waiting for Columbus is my favorite album.

Little Feat is an American jam band institution who began in 1969. The band took a hiatus from 1979-1987 due to the death of Lowell George. They have been performing and recording solidly for the last 27 consecutive years!

Little Feat has several projects afoot that I am excited to share with you.

1. Box Set

The first project is Rad Gumbo: The Complete Warner Bros. Years 1971-1990, a 13 audio CD box set from Rhino Entertainment (part of the Warner Music Group). The clamshell box includes the Feat’s nine studio albums from 1971 to 1990, plus a generous helping of their live recordings and studio outtakes.

Neon Park‘s genius expression as their cover artist captivates the eye and the soul of Little Feat’s mystique.

Little Feat’s box set is due for release on February 25th. Refer to their Rhino press release for more information.

2. Negril, Jamaica

What is it about Negril, Jamaica and Jam Bands? Negril has become the annual home for Gov’t. Mule and Little Feat fans to congregate for a vacation music get together. Gov’t Mule is there right now and as you can see from the poster Little Feat and Craig Fuller, The Midnight Ramble Band, Jorma Kaukonen, David Bromberg, and Vince Herman will be “in-residence” for Ramble On The Island March 5-9, 2014.

I’d love to take Rosemary and I away to Negril to catch either band in their Caribbean island magic someday.

3. Book

Ben Fong-Torres has written a substantive book, Willin’: The Story of Little FeatI am seeking to get a signed copy by the author. My InterWeb research about the book came up with this review as the most “comprehensive”.

If you combine this biography with the box set you will have the best resources to understand Little Feat deeply. Now all we have to do is get Little Feat nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Here is the ipetition that you and your friends can sign to help that cause.

Music Journalism A-Z – Ben Fong-Torres

Ben Fong-Torres

Today’s music blog post is about one of my favorite music journalists, Ben Fong-Torres. I grew up on rock music devouring each issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. I first found the newspaper staring up at me from under a rock on a newstand  in 1968. Coincidentally that was when Ben Fong-Torres started writing for Rolling Stone.  Rolling Stone lit a fuse in the music of our heart that has been burning brightly ever since.

I read many a cover story by Ben Fong-Torres. I love how he illuminated the artist, their music and the cultural time. I recall vividly the time he spent with Sir Paul McCartney and Wings on their North America tour.

He has written nine books. I own one of them, Grateful Dead Scrapbook. I treasure that book. Ben Fong-Torres close relationship with The Grateful Dead is clear throughout this beloved  title.

I am eager to acquire more of his books. The music journalism series A-Z will double the size of my music book library by the time I am done at the end of this month. But that’s okay as music writing and reading is my favorite pastime.
