Jack White’s Album, Lazaretto is No. 1, Sets Vinyl Record ;)

Jack White sets a record for vinyl sales as his album, Lazaretto makes its debut on top of this week’s Billboard albums chart.

Of the 138,000 copies of Lazaretto that White sold, 40,000 were in the vinyl format. According to Billboard, that’s the best sales week for a vinyl album since Billboard began using SoundScan to track sales in 1991.

Lazaretto is the #1 album in the US, Canada and Denmark!

Jack White Presses On, Introducing the Lazaretto Ultra LP

My son posted this Jack White and Ben Blackwell YouTube video on my Facebook page today. He knows my affinity for Jack White and specialty vinyl.

The Jack White Lazaretto Ultra LP is the most unique and multi-faceted vinyl collectible I have ever seen played.

  1.  180 gram vinyl
  2. Two vinyl-only hidden tracks hidden beneath the center labels
  3. One hidden track plays at 78 RPM, one plays at 45 RPM, making this a 3-speed record (33, 45, and 78)
  4. Side A plays from the outside in
  5. Dual-groove technology: plays an electric or acoustic intro for “Just One Drink” depending on where needle is dropped. The grooves meet for the body of the song.
  6. Matte finish on Side B, giving the appearance of an un-played 78 RPM record
  7. Both sides end with locked groove
  8. Vinyl pressed in seldom-used flat-edged format
  9. Dead wax area on Side A contains a hand-etched hologram by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science, the first of its kind on a vinyl record
  10. Absolutely zero compression used during recording, mixing and mastering
  11. Different running order from the CD/digital version
  12. LP utilizes some mixes different from those used on CD and digital version

Drops on June 10, 2014.

The Dust and Grooves Book

Record Store Day

Record Store Day 2014 is a scant two weeks away. The hunt for vinyl treasures will commence once again. Record Store Day 2014 looms as the largest event yet! Record Store Day announced its complete slate of 2014 releases , all 438 of them (with even more surfacing right until that day). I am ambivalent about the future of Record Store Days. My music purchasing and listening habits will alter later this year when the PonoMusic player arrives in October. I will begin purchasing high-resolution audio recordings at prices that will range from $14.99 to $24.99. Whereas both new vinyl (180 to 220 grade) and Record Store Day limited edition “collectibles” have begun ranging in price from $20-$45 for vinyl lps. (It wasn’t that long ago that new vinyl was $10 and don’t give us that bullshit party line that it costs sooo much to start up a vinyl pressing plant (that was dormant and waiting to begin with…) The record companies are screwing the pooch by gouging the record buying public and the record store owners for fatter profit margins. Avaricious profiteering will kill the Record Store Day “golden goose”. I urge you to read these constructive articles about the “destructive” pricing for the two biggest retail days of the year for vinyl record sales.

The articles focus on the record stores and the record labels. They fail to discuss the record store day “collector”‘point of view. That’s a major miss when it comes to who is the customer?

The Dust and Grooves Book

Have no fear the definitive coffee table book about record collectors in their native habitat will be available on Record Store Day April 19, 2014. Dust & Grooves, Adventures In Record Collecting by Eilon Paz is the Official Book of Record Store Day 2014.

DUST & GROOVES: ADVENTURES IN RECORD COLLECTING will be available at select U.S. record stores on Record Store Day, April 19 (The official release date is May 20) and you can learn even more at the blog that started it all, www.dustandgrooves.com

“In just four short years, Eilon Paz has managed to chronicle the impressive stashes of over 30 collectors around the world, from his own backyard in Brooklyn, to faraway destinations such as Ghana and Istanbul. Not bad for a project that started out of unemployment-derived boredom … No matter the size, Paz believes that showing collections is important, as it gives weight to the idea that there’s something worthwhile and meaningful about a physical record collection that’s lost in today’s digital world.” – GOLDMINE MAGAZINE

Jack White’s New Album Lazaretto As Only Jack Can Promote It ;)

Step 1: Announcement and Video

Jack White presents his new album Lazaretto, to be released June 10th on Third Man RecordsLazaretto will inhabit an exciting place in White’s expansive discography as the follow-up to 2012′s gold-certified international #1 Blunderbuss, and will be preceded by first single and title track “Lazaretto,” to be released later this month (See Step 3). While we await the début of that first official single, listeners can experience a first taste of new music from the album and watch the video for new instrumental track “High Ball Stepper”.

Step 2: Third Man Records’ Vault Package #20

In celebration of the new album and their 20th Vault package, Third Man has unveiled their most unique Vault package yet.

The LP for Third Man Records’ Vault package #20 will be the ONLY limited version of Lazaretto to be released. Pressed on split-color blue-and-white vinyl and coupled with exclusive album art, this alternate presentation of the album is both insightful and deserving. Also exclusive to the Vault is a fold-out poster accompanying the album, featuring a classic National Archives photo that serves as a recurrent image throughout the album art.

Unlike the lightning bolt and inverted lightning bolt pressings Third Man did for Jack White’s Blunderboss, this alternate art and colored vinyl will be the only time ANY variation on Lazaretto will be made. Once subscriptions are closed and records are pressed… that’s it. Don’t sleep. Get in now or regret it later.

The 7-inch includes two early demos of songs that appear on Lazaretto in their completed form. Both “Alone in My Home” and “Entitlement” are solo recordings by Jack White, done while he was in Mexico. Pressed on lustrous blue vinyl and housed in the standard felt-weave, die-cut Third Man Vault 7-inch sleeve, both tracks offer a unique glimpse into the creative process and evolution of a song from it’s original germination to its final delivery.

The bonus item is a lavish 40-page hard bound companion piece book full of lyrics, exclusive musical notations, photos and art from Lazaretto. This is the perfect accompaniment to the listening experience and insight into both the album creation method and some of the inspiration (visual and otherwise) behind it.

In addition to these items, Vault package #20 will also include a linen, letter-pressed postcard with the same eye-popping color separations as shown in classic chromatic postcards popular in the first half of the 20th century. Stamps not included.

Subscriptions are open through April 30th, so don’t delay and visit www.thirdmanrecords.com/vault and sign up today.

Step 3: Jack White Recording World’s Fastest Released Record

(Exclusive, Unique, Record Store Day 2014 Event At Third Man Records Store in Nashville, Tennessee Only!)

First thing in the morning, Jack White will take the stage in Third Man’s blue room and record direct-to-acetate what will serve as the limited edition version of his next single, a live rendition of the title track from his upcoming LP Lazaretto. The masters will be rushed over to United Record Pressing who will immediately begin pressing 45s. The sleeves will be printed from pictures taken at the show. The finished records will be whisked back to Third Man to sell to awaiting fans. All in the same day. All in a matter of mere hours. As long as there are fans in line waiting to buy the single, United will continue to press and deliver them to Third Man to sell. Even if it takes all day.

In addition, Whirlwind Heat will appear at Third Man to play their first live show since 2006 (and likely their last ever), as their TMR classic Do Rabbits Wonder? LP is reissued on a variety of colored vinyl for Record Store Day.

Tickets for this whole day – “Ultra Tickets” – are extremely limited and will be available exclusively through The Third Man Records Vault to Platinum Members. Ultra Ticket holders will get to watch Jack White live recording his World’s Fastest Record, Whirlwind Heat’s afternoon performance, and will receive copies of both The World’s Fastest Record 7″ and the Whirlwind Heat Record Store Day LP release–all without having to wait in line! Vault Platinum members who are ticket holders need only show up, see Jack White play, hang out for a bit and eat, watch Whirlwind Heat (last show EVER??) and then, as they leave, pick up their bag with both RSD releases. No lines. No stress.

For those who can’t score tickets, The World’s Fastest Record will be made available for sale from the front of Third Man Records as soon as copies are pressed. Anybody who shows up that day during business hours wanting to buy a copy will get one. Third Man promises to deliver until all customers are satisfied (one per customer, obviously!). The World’s Fastest Record will only be available at Third Man Records on Record Store Day. One time only!
