I Squee for Love Music Again, Wired Interactive Magazine!!!!

Kudos to the Wired Magazine team and Questlove for a well executed focus on digital music and technology. Questlove has become the center point, the grounding agent for music this decade. He is listed as guest DJ on the vibrant cover of the March 2014 issue.

Questlove is more than just a guest DJ as you are probably aware. He has written two extensive books, Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove and Soul Train: The Music, Dance, and Style of a GenerationHe is a music professor at NYU Clive Davis teaching a course entitled Classic Albums.

He is leading The Roots as Jimmy Fallon’s house band on The Tonight Show. There are many more music projects Questlove has been involved with and is working upon. How does he juggle these projects is what I want to know 😉

Wired Magazine is available as a Webzine on the Wired Website. It is also available as the classic print edition from Conde Nast Publications. I especially love the technical inroads Wired Magazine has accomplished with Adobe Digital Publishing Solutions as an interactive digital magazine.

I first read the “love music again” special issue as the print hard copy magazine. The color photography by Pari Dukovic is superb. Questlove and the Wired team lead by Peter Rubin have created a visual graphics design masterpiece that is a marvel to discover, explore, discover and gain substantive resources that will increase your music intellect.

I followed up with Wired’s Website but I found the music essay too chopped up in chunks to appreciate that particular deliverable.

The preferred reading and multimedia experience is the Wired App from iTunes. The Wired Magazine March 2014 “Digital” edition is better integrated with Wired Web. It also inserts Questlove video links that embellish the content exponentially. You’ll love the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00’s, 2014 Spotify/YouTube playlists as a backdrop. (The playlists are also accessible through Questlove’s essay on Wired.com.)

I had an exciting and pleasurable journey with Questlove/Wired Magazine today through all three media experiences. What an awesome way to share music published technology. I am better informed and educated as a result of this experience.

The Animated Picture Disc – Plastic Infinite by Sculpture

The next dimension of the picture disc has been achieved. Embrace and feel the sensory titillation of Plastic Infinite from the Opto-musical agglomerate known as Sculpture. It will envelop you in an audio/visual immersive experience. In the day we would say about an experience like this, “Let’s go trip out to the Plastic Infinite” 😉

The preferred listening+ method is to witness the engineered result of Plastic Infinite as follows.  You will have to play the 7″ EP on your turntable and view with either a strobe @25 flashes per second or a video camera @25fps, very high shutter speed, progressive.

I presently don’t have these options at my disposal but I believe my son can help me here so I will get with him when we have a copy of the second pressing as their first pressing of Plastic Infinite has sold out!

Thankfully Sculpture has made a music video of Plastic Infinite. I have watched it in jaw dropping wonder several times now. I love the Numark turntable it’s playing upon, I want that for my audio system. Hey Now!

Sculpture the Opto-musical agglomerate is Dan Hayhurst: (media devices, electronic instruments) and Reuben Sutherland: (video zoetrope turntable, animation, optix).

Their technique uses zoetrope.

A zoetrope is a drum shaped optical toy that makes a series of drawings appear to move. The drum sits on a stand upon which it can be spun. Its sides are pierced with a regular pattern of slits. The drawings, the number of which corresponds to the number of slits, are printed onto a strip of paper which is placed inside the drum. These drawings differ only slightly from one another and follow a logical sequence.

The drum is spun and the viewer watches the images through the slits where they appear to move. The zoetrope is an optical toy that can be enjoyed by several people at the same time.

It was invented by W. G. Horner in 1834, and later developed by Milton Bradley who patented it in the USA in 1867.

Thankful To Jack White, Sound Saviour

The ethnomusicologist in me is thankful for the contributions from Jack White. I dub him Saviour of Music and Sound. He works quietly yet powerfully behind the scenes as champion of analog sound, concert venues (Detroit’s Masonic Temple, renamed the Jack White Temple)and now sound preservation.

Today I learned Jack White, ardent enthusiast of old recording methods, is sharing his resources to save actual old recordings. He contributed $200, 000 to the The National Recording Preservation Foundation. White is on the board of directors for the charity.

“He doesn’t take advantage of the speed and utility of digital methodology, and loves the warmth and immersive character of analog.”

The gift means the foundation, based in Washington, D.C., can begin awarding grants and processing delicate old recordings, many of which are in perilous condition.

They are the independent, nonprofit charitable corporation established by the U.S. Congress for the purpose of supporting archives, libraries, cultural institutions and others committed to preserving America’s radio, music and recorded sound heritage.

The foundation is the third element of the National Recording Preservation Act. The first two established a registry of important recordings, and created a board to decide which ones to prioritize saving.

In the music of our heart it’s all about preserving invaluable works of art heritage for the generations ahead to stimulate their knowledge and creativity.

Thomas Dolby, Ridgefield Playhouse, Tonight

Time Capsule Tour 2012 - RidgefieldWhen I wrote last October about Thomas Dolby I wondered what his 2012 concert tour be like? As you can see its called Time Capsule Tour 2012. Tonight the tour stops at the Ridgefield Playhouse where we will be witnessing, listening and hopefully dancing along.

I love the inventive genius Thomas Dolby brings to the entertainment experience.

Thomas Dolby’s Time Capsule will be parked outside the venue. I hope we get a chance to record a 30 sec clip inside tonight for the future. An ingenious idea.

I perceive he will be playing selections from A Map of the Floating City among his other classics. I am liking the song Spice Train from the latest CD the most now.

I look forward to learning more about Thomas Dolby tonight.

Tagi – Charles Lloyd

Charles Lloyd wrote on his Web site,

Music is a healing force. It has the ability to transcend boundaries, it can touch the heart directly, it can speak to a depth of the spirit where no words are needed. It is a most powerful form of communication and expression of beauty. Whether in context of my “New Quartet” with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers, and Eric Harland, or Sangam, with Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland, and more recently with Maria Farantouri, it gives me great joy to make music with each of them. Each time we play together there is a healing wholeness that permeates the atmosphere.

We must go forward, all the great ones that went before us insisted on this. For each generation, it is incumbent upon us to rise up and sing the song – the journey and pursuit is unending. I will always remember that from his death bed Master Higgins told me “We must continue to work on this music,” and as long as I am able, I will continue to do so. Each of us has his own experience, and from that experience, something is transmitted. For me, the purpose of life is to know God and the struggle of spiritual life will go on as long as I have breath. The pursuit and the music are one.

The most reflective, uplifting moment of the Charles Lloyd New Quartet concert at Wesleyan University, now two days hence,  was the performance of the spoken word meditation, “Tagi.”

Pianist Jason Moran pulls up another chair to the piano and Charles Lloyd sits next to him swinging the microphone close to allow for his poetic narration to flow from his guiding light voice to our ears and senses.

“Tagi” is a Bhagavida Gita inspired Lloyd composition where Charles Lloyd poetically speaks in a meditative chant-like mantra on top of the arco bass of Mr. Rogers, the delicate piano tinkling of Mr. Moran and the “Om-like” baritone chants of Mr. Harland. The moment that Lloyd’s spiritual narration over the soft accompaniment creates is deeply inspiring yogi.

He knows bliss in the Atman

And wants nothing else.

Cravings torment the heart:
He renounces cravings.
I call him illumined.

Not shaken by adversity,
Not hankering after happiness:
Free from fear, free from anger,
Free from the things of desire.
I call him a seer, and illumined.

The spirituality and the healing power of “Tagi” is further accented by Charles Lloyd on tenor sax. His instrument flows with a cornucopia of colors as we regale in the splendor of the illumination.

Ah at last it has all become abundantly clear, the mirror is a reflection of our inner soul.

Jaron Lanier – Visionary Musician

My goal is to be a cognoscenti in music, instructional design and journalistic excellence. I visualize these three disciplines in total congruence. They are the Zen of my work-life balance.

Journeying further along that path I meld my purpose with instinctual visionaries such as Jaron Lanier. Jaron Lanier is blessed with an innovative musical purpose that transcends much of what we understand about past and present state music. Thankfully he crafts that skill readily through the unique construction of  musical instruments he invents which allows us to experience the deeper textures of music’s rich harmonic spectrum.

I believe the body is able to know much more than the mind, in terms of instantaneous action. And there will be some very somatic form of programming in the future. And I look to musical instruments as an inspiration as to what that will be like….

So, essentially, I think the way we look at in musical instruments today is what programming languages will look like tomorrow. Not the music, but the instruments….

Graphic Design and Dark Side of the Moon

Graphic design is the process of communicating visually using text and/or images to present information, or promote a message.

Graphic design is compelling when blended with the right music to form a harmonious audio visual experience. A major tipping point in the intersection of art and innovation is the classic work, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd (1973). Hipgnosis (1968-1983) was the British design firm who created stimulating album art for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and other classic rock groups. The Hipgnosis design team broke new ground constantly with their unique mind’s eye visual rock art packaging.

“The refracting glass prism referred to Floyd light shows – consummate use of light in the concert setting. Its outline is triangular and triangles are symbols of ambition, and are redolent of pyramids, both cosmic and mad in equal measure, all these ideas touching on themes in the lyrics. The joining of the spectrum extending round the back cover and across the gatefold inside was seamless like the segueing tracks on the album, whilst the opening heartbeat was represented by a repeating blip in one of the colors.” Storm Thorgerson.
