Pale Ale

An explosion of fruit in every sip, Dragons & YumYums is an intensely tropical – yet subtlety bitter – pale ale brewed with a combination of dragonfruit, yumberry, passionfruit, pear juice and black carrot juice. Clocking in at 6.5% ABV and 25 IBU, Dragons & YumYums is a first-of-its-kind beer and vinyl collaboration with American rock icons, The Flaming Lips.

A sensory enveloping experience at the intersection of creative beer paired with creative music, the energy of this union inspired Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne to use ingredients from the beer – dragonfruit and yumberries – as characters in two original songs, The Story of Yum Yum and Dragon and Pouring Beer in Your Ear … making this the first beer with its own theme song!

With dragonfruit and yumberry as the main elements, Wayne transformed them into storyful lyrics in the song like, “Yum Yum and Dragon went out for a drive, but Yum Yum doesn’t have any eyes….Yum Yum and Dragon, they’re happy they’re friends…”

The psychedelic influence of the label artwork, designed by Marq Spusta as part of Dogfish Head’s Off-Centered Art Series, was influenced by the legacy of the Flaming Lips and the culinary components in Dragons & YumYums shown through radiating lines, movement of fire, dancing lips, rainbows and bold pink colors.

Elton John Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Record Store Day

To commemorate the 10th Record Store Day, Elton will serve as the first-ever worldwide Record Store Day Legend and release an expanded, double-vinyl version of his first live album.

Happy 10th birthday to Record Store Day. I love record stores, I can go to the record store in Vegas and spend three hours in there. Just the smell of it, the looking at it, the wonder of it, the memories. I love vinyl so much; the tactile nature, the ritual of it, looking at the sleeve…especially with the old albums and the liner notes – who played on them, the process of putting it on, the needle going on and the sound coming out. And it DOES sound better, I know it does! It’s just the wonder of having vinyl. – Elton John

Celebrating music Dogfish  Head has crafted Beer To Drink Music To ’17, a tropical blonde ale brewed with kiwi juice and hibiscus flowers.

In addition  to the Record Store Day event, Dogfish Head is helping to sponsor and promote The Paste Sampler, a clear vinyl LP included with Paste Quarterly Spring 2017 an innovative rebirth of Paste Magazine in a large 12″ magazine format.

I got my copy yesterday as a result of an IndieGoGo crowdfund pledge I made. It is a sweet magazine to savor and read. I plan to listen to the sampler this weekend, read my new magazine and have a Beer To Drink Music To ’17 as I sit out the winter storm headed our way.

Cheers to Dogfish Head Brewery for taking a leadership role in music empowerment!

Vinyl Street Cafe, Black Friday, Record Store Day

My son and I have a tradition on Black Friday, Record Store Day. We visit a record store in Connecticut and purchase vinyl Record Store Day recordings. We have done this for five years now. Its a fun hobby that we like to share together.

This year we plan to visit Vinyl Street Cafe, 1895 Post Road, Suite C, Fairfield, CT. This is a new record store for us and we want to support their business. I have been reviewing the store’s Web site and Facebook page in anticipation of the shopping experience. I like that they are very honest with the inventory representation on hand. They have an eBay store which lists their entire inventory saving guess work.

Vinyl Street Cafe

I’m motivated to see a music retailer specializing in vinyl (and other media) open a store front in these times. Its a bold and respected move. Vinyl sales are trending upward and today is an important selling day in that trend line.

Years back I ran a books and record department for Caldor Inc., a discount department store chain. I enjoyed working with book publishers and record company representatives who called at store level. I used to receive free recordings from Capitol Records, CBS Records and other perks. I sure do miss those options. They included free concert tickets and record company events. CBS Records took my wife and I to see Bruce Springsteen and the E. Street Band for “The Darkness on the Edge of Town” tour at the New Haven Coliseum in 1978. Bruce and the band played for 4 hours that night.I heard he went over to Toads Place after the show and played til closing. It was without a doubt, the best “free” concert we ever witnessed.

Record Store Day Pledge signed

I’m in the hunt for several of this year’s Record Store Day Exclusives, Limited Run and First Run recordings. We’ll be shopping later in the day and coping with what is left. We have gotten up super early in the past to get on line to purchase but that experience has typically been unruly and unrewarding.

The store was tucked away in the alley off of US 1. Parking was convenient and adjacent. I loved the serene atmosphere of the store. The record crates were accessible either waist high or kneeling pads were provided for the lower level ground floor viewing.  The second half of the store contained a listening room with two different turntable models for sale. We were served hot cider and given fresh dinner rolls made by the owner’s Mother.

My son and I had a nice conversation with the owner, Josh Wright. Our discussion ranged from Chess Records, to the pricing of today’s vinyl market. He showed us the video projector and screen that launches from the ceiling where movies can be shown.

We vowed to return again as we liked the shopping experience a lot.

Dogfish Head Beer and Record Store Day 2016

Starting with the natural product, Beer To Drink Music To, which was created as the perfect beer for fans to pair with their favorite songs. Utilizing ingredients inspired by some of our favorite tunes, the four primary ingredients (orange peel, peppercorns, candi sugar, and cardamom) were inspired by the following: Orange Crush by REM, Sgt. Pepper by The Beatles, Sugar On My Tongue by Talking Heads, and Mock Song by Phish. The result is a Belgian-style Tripel and a perfect marriage between beer and music.

Beer To Drink Music To

The companion to Beer To Drink Music To is Music To Drink Beer To, Volume 2 a Record Store Day 2016 vinyl exclusive curated between Dogfish Head and Sony Legacy.
