The Nicky Hopkins Memorial

Nicky Hopkins, the late respected session artist, will be honored with a memorial park bench in his hometown of Perivale, Ealing, London.

The bench, which will be located in Perivale Park, will be unveiled by his widow, Moira Hopkins in a ceremony on September 8th. To make the bench unique to Hopkins, the seat of the bench will look like a large piano keyboard while the backrest will feature display photographs of Nicky, his biography, the top 20 tracks he played on as chosen by his fans, as well as a quote from Bob Harris.

Nicky Hopkins Bench

Nicky recorded and performed with many of the top acts in rock from the 1960s to the 1990s, including the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Garfunkel, The Kinks, and The Who among numerous others.

My Favorite Character in the Movie Sing

If you haven’t seen the movie Sing yet I urge you to watch it. We love to view it with my great-niece and great-nephews. We took them with their Mom and my brother and sister-in-law last year. to the movie theater to witness it.  Upon repeated viewings, amazingly the performances, the story, and the 3D animation get better and better.

My favorite character is Johnny, an English teenage gorilla who longs to sing, despite his father who wants him to lead a life of crime. His moment of triumph is when he sings and plays the piano, Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing”.

Rick Wakeman, Piano Portraits

Piano Portraits is the 100th solo album from Rick Wakeman.

Rest in Peace, Leon Russell

I glanced on my computer at what was trending in Facebook when I saw that Leon Russell, “the Master of Space and Time” passed away peacefully in his sleep. His soul ascends on the Lord’s day this Sunday November 13.

My brother will ask me if I ever saw Leon Russell perform live. I actually did in a very small blues club, the Boxcar Cafe in Southport, CT on October 10, 2004 . He performed with his daughter that night Sugaree Rose Bridges sharing vocals and gigging with his band.

I wanted to give Elton something. But what do you give a guy who has six fully stocked houses? So I thought the only thing I could give him is a song. “In the Hands of Angels,” retelling of the story of the album [The Union], thanks Mr. John (“the guv’ner” in the lyrics), who knew all the places I needed to go and made me feel the love down deep inside.

Leon Russell[8]

For today Leon Russell is, “In The Hands of Angels”.

If you believe in forever
Then life is just a one-night stand
If there’s a rock n’ roll heaven
Well you know they’ve got a hell of a band

It finds her returning to the piano and her roots. The album features Blue Note luminaries including saxophonist Wayne Shorter, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and drummer Brian Blade on a 12-song set that presents 9 new originals alongside covers of songs by Horace SilverDuke Ellington and Neil Young.

‘Carry On’ is the first single from Norah’s new album.

Hum

I awoke several mornings ago with the beginnings of a song in the music of our heart. I grabbed my iPhone quickly before the “chorus” vanished from my head into the ether. I wrote the four lines into Notes, reading them and smiling to myself that I had the beginning of a song.

I’ve never written a song chorus before in my life. It was a moment that has inspired me. I envisioned sitting at the Baldwin piano in my house with blank sheet music paper, plunking on the keys and creating a melody. I hope I can write the rest of the song.

So why am I sharing all of this with my readers? Because I have discovered an iPhone app that may make my songwriting and perhaps yours more proficient. The app is named Hum.

Hum combines note-taking and audio recording into a single app for capturing and organizing all your songwriting ideas.

The thought occurred to me that I could take the chorus from Notes and move those four lines into Hum.

So I took the impulsive next step. I downloaded the Hum $1.99 app and began experimenting with it. I felt elated and overwhelmed at the same time.

I trust I made the right investment 😉

A Town Hall With Billy Joel Hosted By His Friend Howard Stern

We love our SiriusXM Satellite Radio. My wife and I are listening to the event that was taped earlier today. That is one of the beauties of the Howard Stern Channel 100, getting to hear the show as much as they repeat it for us subscribers.

Fans got to attend based upon the great question they submitted and then some of them got to ask Billy Joel live.

Both Billy Joel and Howard Stern are incredibly honest personalities.  The radio banter is warm, intimate and honest.

The Billy Joel Town Hall event had several great guest stars, Idina Menzel, Pink, Melissa Etheridge, Boyz To Men sing Billy Joel songs. Be prepared its very raw and mostly unrehearsed. But it is also music honest and real performed live which I love.

Billy Joel has a special, limited channel (90 days only) on SiriusXM that his friend Howard Stern encouraged him to do. We listen to Channel 705  as much as we can as loyal Billy Joel fans.

Tune in if you are a SiriusXM subscriber or Google this event on the Web to learn more about this truly unique event. Either way you will not be disappointed, trust us.

She’s Got A Way – Billy Joel

I find the simplicity of this love song by Billy Joel endearing. Whenever I hear it I think of my loving wife Rosemary.  I dedicate this love song to you dear.

Rosemary, You are the music of our heart, always & forever. ( ‘}{‘ )

She’s Got A Way

She’s got a way about her
I don’t know what it is, but I know that I can’t live without her
She’s got a way of pleasin’
I don’t know why it is, but there doesn’t have to be a reason anyway

She’s got a smile that heals me
I don’t know why it is, but I have to laugh when she reveals me
And she’s got a way of talkin’
Don’t know why it is, but it lifts me up when we are walkin’ anywhere

She comes to me when I’m feelin’ down, inspires me without a sound
She touches me and I get turned around

She’s got a way of showin’
How I make her feel and I find the strength to keep on goin’
And she’s got a light around her
And everywhere she goes, million dreams of love surround her everywhere

She comes to me when I’m feelin’ down, inspires me without a sound
She touches me, I get turned around

She’s got a smile that heals me
I don’t know why it is, but I have to laugh when she reveals me
And she’s got a way about her
I don’t know what it is, but I know that I can’t live without her anyway

The Million Dollar Piano, Elton John – A Concert Movie Extravaganza

Elton John has had a very successful long term residence in Las Vegas. For the past three years his show at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace has been “The Million Dollar Piano“. It has grossed $42 Million Dollars in the Six Legs it has run to date! At the centerpiece of the performance is the show’s namesake piano, an engineering marvel featuring more than 68 LED video screens created by Yamaha.

If I had plans to go to Las Vegas and Elton John was performing “The Million Dollar Piano” I would make that event my priority. We just saw Elton John this past November in Bridgeport and it was a phenomenal show. It was clear throughout the evening how much the 10 year Vegas residency has aided Elton John’s live stage act.

Well if you can’t get to Las Vegas here is the next best thing. Elton John is releasing a film of the Las Vegas show, The Million Dollar Piano, which will play at 500 movie theaters in America and 1,200 in over 40 other countries. The concert will screen on March 18th, with an encore showing on March 26th.

Tickets go on sale on Valentines Day, Friday 2/14/14, more info here.
