Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson featuring Sean Ono Lennon with ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’

An inspiring performance from this superstar collaboration. The Electric Lady Studio Jimi Hendrix wall painting frames the setting.

Miley Cyrus’s vocal is captivating in its ascension. I love her War is Over green and white baseball t-shirt 🙂

Mark Ronson’s Wall of Sound reveres the original song’s producer, Phil Spector.

Miley’s endearing admiration for Sean Ono Lennon is evident. Sean stays focused as he sings the counter melody, paying homage to his Father and Mother’s timeless creation.

The President Sang Amazing Grace

Yesterday I posted an animated video based on the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young song “Teach Your Children”. The video was animated by Jeff Scher.

When I looked further into who Jeff Scher is I learned he had previously captured a historic tribute in, “The President Sang Amazing Grace”. This moving tribute is performed by Joan Baez and written by Zoe Mulford. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries from independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.

“When Barack Obama sang ‘Amazing Grace’ at the service for the Charleston Church shooting victims, it was deeply moving,” Scher told The Atlantic. “Somehow Obama, with his humble singing voice, turned grief into grace. With humility, compassion, and a two-hundred-year-old hymn, he made us feel that the evil deeds of a sick individual could not shake the bonds of our common humanity.”

This video was produced by Rick Litvin and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. It is the first of a 10-part visual album in collaboration with NYU that coincides with each of the 10 songs on Baez’s new album, ‘Whistle Down The Wind’.

Teach Your Children Graham Nash (2018)

This video is a collaboration between Graham Nash and celebrated filmmaker and animator Jeff Scher. The imagery frames the youth-led liberal activism of 2018 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and Peace demonstrations of the 1960’s, providing a powerful visual aid to Graham Nash’s relevant-as-ever appeal to teach not only our children but also our parents well.

“I wrote Teach Your Children because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well. I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting.” – Graham Nash (2018)

Ann Wilson’s Immortal and More News

One of the finest voices in classic rock music belongs to Ann Wilson of Heart.  I have received periodic mailings about a new album she is working on officially titled Immortal, which appears near completion.

The theme of Immortal focuses on various tracks originally recorded by “artists who have departed in the last several years,” Wilson notes that the album’s name emphasizes an awareness that “the artists have left us, but their expressions live in our hearts for all time.”

The artists honored on Immortal  include, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Glenn Frey, Amy Winehouse, and Lesley Gore…

Surprise guests on the record features Jeff Beck on killer guitar!  It just so happens that Ann Wilson will be touring with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers this summer. Synchronicity.

Lots of new music from Ann Wilson and friends in the coming months ahead…

Gregg Allman – “My Only True Friend”

The music of our heart is still heavy reflecting on Gregg Allman’s passing. I am forever thankful for the blues music he has introduced me to with The Allman Brothers Band and on his poignant solo albums.

I was recently acknowledged by Gregg’s official store with a thank you for pre-purchasing his final album Southern Blood.

Thank you for placing an early order for Gregg Allman’s SOUTHERN BLOOD vinyl (out 9/8). We know many of you have been waiting awhile for the finished album, and you placed an order without a lot of information. As our way of showing our appreciation, we’re letting you know:

You will receive the limited edition SOUTHERN BLOOD LP at no extra charge. None of these items will be part of the future regular edition.

Details:
    (a) Heavyweight, hardwood colored vinyl
    (b) Portrait lithograph (12” x 12”)
    (c) Two bonus live tracks (included with a download card).
    (d) Full album download card

That left me reassured as I have come to appreciate how accommodating the Allman community and Music Today have been over the years.

In anticipation of next month’s order, I am sharing this recent video of “My Only True Friend” which reveals the warm spirit found inside Gregg’s recording session.

Father John Misty is the music guest on Saturday Night Live tonight to promote his third studio album, Pure Comedy on Sub Pop Records releasing April 7th.  According to wikipedia, most of Pure Comedy was written in 2015.[2] It touches on themes of progress, technology, fame, the environment, politics, aging, social media, human nature, human connection and his own role in it all.
