Michael Stipe at Moogfest 2017

nide9wegxqr0r4grprhkMarking a significant moment for the multimedia artist and forefather of alternative rock, Michael Stipe will release a never-before-seen installation at Moogfest 2017. The installation will be a compilation of video footage he has shot over the years in New York City that explores desire and movement. Using Moog gear, Stipe will score the piece, marking his first solo composition ever. The installation will run continuously throughout the festival.

Stipe became involved thanks to festival’s exec producer Kai Riedl, a former member of experi-post-rock band Macha. It’s thanks to the Athens, Georgia connection, that Riedl and Stipe have been friends for 20-odd years.

“Over the last decade, Michael has expanded his futurist leaning and artistic output through various projects, many of these with imagery and film he’s shot himself,” says Riedl of Stipe’s involvement. “During this time, largely as a member of R.E.M., he has also worked often with Moog synths. This installation presents a unique opportunity to wed these two worlds in a multimedia experience and to expand on his explorations as a solo artist. Stipe has always had a futurist yet Southern leaning style and has had a rich history of creating in the South, so having Moogfest in the region of his hometown of Athens made it all the more appealing. In addition, Stipe has always been a voice for equality, new creative possibilities and futurist ideals—many of the same pillars of Moogfest.”

Here is a NY Times interview from last year that serves as a prediction to Michael Stipe’s return to live performance. He has joined his good friend, Patti Smith at several of her concerts including her birthday celebration on 12/30/16 at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago.

Deep Forest, evo devo

Ever since my college music days some 40+ years ago I have been enamored with musique electronique. Like many musicologists I consider French-born composer, Edgard Varese the Father of Electronic Music. Frank Zappa, Varese’s protegé characterized him best, “The present day composer refuses to die.”

If you study the six degrees of separation between musique electronique, Varese, and Zappa you will juxtapose the French  composer Eric Mouquet, founder of the pioneering electro-ethno-ambient band, Deep Forest.

There is peace to experience in the journey through the light and trees in the deep forests of our world. Eric Mouquet navigates those experiences in his travels,  treating our senses to those natural settings.

The latest Deep Forest recording, evo devo is an earthly treasure. Mouquet revisits the sounds he and Michel Sanchez first recorded on Deep Forest in 1992 (now out of print). Those are some of the most amazing sonic textures I have ever absorbed. The remixes of some of those original tracks on this album made me smile to hear them once more.

Deep Forest

Deep Forest recently held a Pledge Music project which I missed, but I was able to order an autographed copy of evo devo, from the Web page today.

Allow yourself to experience Deep Forest, connecting your spirit with the nature and our world.

Ryuichi Sakamoto – Playing The Orchestra 2013

I have experienced a wonderful connection in the music of our heart with Ryuichi Sakamoto. It began innocently yesterday when I was listening to the remix of Meredith Monk and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s, “Astronaut Anthem”.

I decided to delve into Ryuichi Sakamoto’s body of work. I rediscovered his superb touch on the piano by listening to Playing The Piano, US Version (2010).

I was captivated by the beauty of the composition, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence“. I researched Ryuichi Sakamoto on the InterWeb and discovered Commmons. A new music community for real artists and music lovers, an oasis I plan to visit often 🙂

“Commmons (Commons)” as artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto in order to explore new possibilities of music, is a project which was established with Avex Group. Under the slogan “think global, act local”, and has a point of view ecological, as new music community aimed at social and cultural contribution, in order to create a better relationship between artist / creator, music industry, the user / listener “common land It is intended to be a (commons). ” In the hope that music (music) continues to exist in the center of the common land (commons), was named the three “m” and “commmons”.

I look forward to the future release, Playing The Orchestra 2013 (December 11, 2013)Ryuichi Sakamoto performs on piano with conductor Hirofumi Kurita  and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

I hope one day to have the honor of revelling in the musical genius of Ryuichi Sakamoto live in  concert. It turns out he and I are the same age which inspires me greatly.

Ethno Ambient Music from Deep Forest

Ten years ago I attended a Santana concert in the mountains of Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was the 2003 Shaman Tour and the opening act was Angelique Kidjo who was on fire that night!

As the stage was reset for Santana they played this totally immersive world music. I was entranced by what I heard and I searched high and low to find out who that artist was after the concert. I had to have that recording 😉

I discovered the artist was Deep Forest. I found the CD on amazon and I play it to death, happily so.

Here’s the title track and cover from Deep Forest’s 1992 debut album.

This is a “rare and wonderful mix of ambient modern music and the songs of the pygmies of the Central African rainforest.” I hope you’ll find it as infectious as I do. The interaction between an indigenous culture and electronic ambience is striking. I love to just let the whole album just loop and take me to that trance place 🙂

Computer World – Kraftwerk

My days and nights are filled with music and technology. I am a music journalist who is also an information technology instructor.

I have received electronic music vibrations since I awoke today. It’s the digital bits communicating to me in their binary structure. This has led me to explore the cerebral further the musique electronique sounds of Kraftwerk.

I have listened to Kraftwerk’s catalog of recordings since breakfast and have connected with the album, Computer World (1981). It is proving the perfect blend of  sonics for this digital music technologist. The album was released in 1981 the year I commenced my computer career as a programmer analyst in software development. Gotta love how that works together 😉

I have included several blog posts in the Related articles section (Thanks Zemanta) from WordPress bloggers who have captured the essence of Kraftwerk in their writings.

I’d love to see the Kraftwerk 3D concert live someday, perhaps in Germany 🙂
