Patti Smith at the Minetta Lane

I love when Patti Smith narrates her audio books. There is something about her voice that soothes the passion in my soul. Her latest title is Patti Smith at the Minetta Lane. It is available from Audible. You can download it and listen for free if this is the first time you are getting an Audible trial account.

I just finished reading Will Hermes article about Patti’s performance in the New York Times this morning. He is a superb music journalist and I am glad to see him writing for the Times.

Her stage patter has always been its own entertainment, part stand-up comedy, part populist sermonizing.

Patti Smith at the Minetta Lane features live audio of performances captured over three evenings in September of 2018 at the Minetta Lane Theatre in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, woven into a single, one-of-a-kind audio event. Pioneering artist and writer Patti Smith commands the stage to perform original spoken-word stories from her life, interwoven with the music of her beloved catalogue, played live by Smith, her son and daughter–Jackson and Jesse Paris Smith–and longtime collaborator Tony Shanahan. What transpires is a personally revelatory showcase, an intimate portrait of an icon, focusing on family and taking stock of a near to 50-year career devoted to artistic integrity.

The Universal Tone, My Life By Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana will release his biography, The Universal Tone, My Life on November 4, 2014. The book will be published by Little, Brown and Company, a publishing group of Hachette Book Group.

The intimate and long-awaited memoir of guitar legend Carlos Santana

In the realm of guitar gods, Santana stands alone for what’s come to be called his “universal tone”-both the fact that you can recognize a Santana song from just one note and the fact that Santana is well known to believe music and soul are interconnected.

In the category of major rock memoirs yet undone, this is at the top-a big autobiography by one of the most mysterious and influential musicians of the last 50 years.

From growing up dirt poor in Mexico and suffering abuse to becoming a lowly dishwasher in the US with a hot guitar hand, to a person whom you might almost think is perpetually in a state of nirvana or at least bliss, this is the story of a fascinating man who brings the ideal combination of storytelling gold and a major marketing machine.

This is one of the most sensory (and sensual) major rock bios you’ll ever read. His voice comes through, it’s deeply honest and frank, and from imagining the wisps of smoke from a long gone Miles Davis before Carlos’s shows to describing the depths of his connection to sound, Santana brings a remarkable book to his huge following this fall.

Collaborators

The C in Carlos stands for collaboration. The Santana album, Supernatural commenced Carlos Santana’s collaboration era. All of his next albums evidence that cooperative spirit. It stands to reason that Carlos Santana would collaborate his personal journey with his two close music writer/historian friends, Ashley Kahn and Hal Miller. Carlos Santana, Ashley Kahn and Hal Miller share a common bond, the spirit of jazz embodied by Mr. Miles Davis and Mr. John Coltrane. I feel it is important that my readers gain an appreciation for the backgrounds of these two prominent music journalists. It will increase your anticipation of the quality of the biography we will receive later this year.

I also point you to a Web article about Ashley Kahn interviewing Carlos Santana at the New Orleans Jazz Fest 2014.

Ashley Kahn

Ashley Kahn has authored three of the best jazz books you will ever read. Two of those three books are about major jazz albums, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. Each book is a masterpiece of research, rich in history and facts about these classic recordings. I own both books, signed and I love to read them as I listen to these two amazing albums to gain more insight about the respective jazz geniuses.

Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, foreword by Jimmy Cobb, 2001, Da Capo Press, USA, ISBN 0-306-81067-0

A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album, foreword by Elvin Jones, 2002 for the first edition, Viking Penguin, USA, ISBN 0-670-03136-4

The third jazz book covers the definitive jazz label, Impulse Records. Nate Chinen just wrote a fantastic article in the New York Times about Impulse Records resurgence.

The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. (2006) W. W. Norton, ISBN 0-393-05879-4

Ashley Kahn is also a prolific liner note writer for a variety of music reissue labels, for which he has earned three ASCAP/Deems Taylor awards, and two Grammy nominations.

Ashley Kahn presently is an adjunct professor at New York University, teaching various courses for the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music in NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. I’d love to attend one of his courses.

Hal Miller

Hal Miller is a longtime personal friend of Carlos Santana. Hal Miller is Carlos’s documentarian. Hal is a subject matter authority on Carlos Santana and the world of jazz. Hal has authored insightful liner notes for recordings in the Santana catalogue. Hal’s liner notes proved noteworthy for the Santana reissues, Caravanserai, Love Devotion and Surrender, and Moonflower.

Hal Miller has documented many of the Santana concert tours which you can read on the Santana.com Tour Blog. Hal Miller is also a great photographer, look here for you many of his Santana photographs.

Hal Miller shuns publicity on the InterWeb which I respect about him. This Website had the best tribute and information links about Hal.

Please Be With Me, A Song For My Father, Duane Allman By Galadrielle Allman

Galadrielle Allman’s memoir, PLEASE BE WITH ME is a revelatory meditation on the impact of her father, the legendary guitarist Duane Allman. Not only is this THE definitive biography, with never-before-seen stories, photos, and primary source interviews, it is also a touching and beautifully written story of a daughter searching for her father in the memory of others.

It took her many years to accept that his story and his legacy is hers, so she began to ask for stories–from family, band mates, friends–and they began to flow. The result, as her uncle Gregg Allman says, is a “deep and insightful book;” one that, “came as a revelation to me, as it will to everyone who reads it.”

Galadrielle Allman’s first book about her father will be released on March 4th. The marketplace timing is superb as public interest and sentiment about The Allman Brothers Band will be running high in March.

The Allman Brothers Band will play 14 shows at New York City’s Beacon Theatre between March 7 and March 29. The run is likely to be the iconic Southern rockers last at the venue, as Gregg Allman has stated that the group will stop touring after 2014.

Hittin’ the Note, The Allman Brothers Band Web Site offers the best price and related material deal I have found yet for this anticipated book. All pre-orders will receive a free printed copy of Hittin’ The Note Magazine Issue #80 which will feature an in-depth article with Galadrielle Allman.  The Hittin’ The Note pre-order price is $21.00 before shipping and tax are applied. You can pre-order here.

WILD TALES by Graham Nash

The aging rockers autobiography series continues with Wild Tales by Graham Nash. The book will be released on September 17, 2013 in various media options, hardcover (Crown Archetype), audiobook CD (Random House Audio), amazon Kindle, Nook Book (eBook) and Apple iBook. (The ebook edition from various suppliers includes 4 videos, 34 audio clips, and 11 additional photos from Graham Nash’s personal collection. Audio and video content does not play on all reading devices. Check your user manual for details.

The amazon listing appears to be confused about Wild Tales in paperback as they show a “used book” listing from 1974, 64 pages  in length from Warner Brothers Publications. It was illustrated by Joni Mitchell. “Wild Tales” is also the name of Graham Nash’s late 1973 solo album.

Traditionally paperback releases follow hardcover publication after a certain “established timeframe”.

I am considering attending his Barnes & Noble book signing appearance in New York City on September 23rd if we can make it down to the E. 17th Street store that evening.

For those of you who are interested in more pictures and details about Graham Nash’s forthcoming book, I suggest that you read the Daily News Review by Sherryl Connelly. She dishes the dirt I’ll warn you in advance 😉

Greg Lake, Autobiography:Lucky Man & CD:Songs of a Lifetime

Greg Lake has a wonderful voice with memorable inflection and hauntingly wonderful tonality. He is a vital vocal energy in the music of our heart.

Lucky Man – Autobiography

I keep discovering audio books to listen to which help pass time illuminated by the spoken word. Greg Lake is the midst of writing his autobiography ‘Lucky Man’ which is projected to be completed by the end of this year. As good fortune would have it you can buy Volume 1 of his book now as a USB guitar collectible (Click the image for ordering information). Greg Lake is our reader which adds a special intimacy to the listening/fan experience. The daybreak is your midnight; the colors have all died.  Disturbing the waters of our lives, of our lives, of our lives, lives,  Lives, lives…  Of our lives. – Greg Lake, “Take A Pebble

Songs of a Lifetime

Greg Lake has released a live recording of his 2012 Songs of a Lifetime Tour. He is a sheer delight to witness in concert. You will be amazed when you hear him sing how you drift back to the time when King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer graced your stereo system. He typifies the feeling that you share with him in a concert hall in the quote below. We saw him a few years back with Keith Emerson at the Ridgefield Playhouse. It was a marvelous show and C’est La Vie was our highlight that evening.

The idea for the tour came about as Lake was writing his autobiography ‘Lucky Man,’ which is due toward the end of 2013. “Behind these songs there were often stories to be told and it occurred to me that the same must be true for the audience as well,” he says in a press release. “It was then that I thought of the idea of doing a series of very small intimate concerts where I could perform these songs and exchange stories with the audience, in a way reliving the time when the music we shared together really became part of our identity and in a way became the backdrop to our lives.”

View this tasty sample of one of Greg Lake’s “Songs of a Lifetime” tour concerts in this short video, filmed and edited by noted Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Archivist and Curator Tony Ortiz.

Neil Young Joins Twitter, Premiere’s “Walk Like A Giant”, Truly Rust Never Sleeps

Neil Young launched his Official Twitter Account yesterday. It’s great to see Neil Young on Twitter and to know he will be interacting with us soon through the social networking medium. It is smart for him to set up a Twitter presence as this coincides with the release of his memoir, Waging Heavy Peace. I received my audio CD edition narrated by Keith Carradine yesterday too :). I am enchanted to no end with what Neil Young shares through the passages of the book. More to say about this in a future blog post…

Very cool to know Neil Young will be holding a Q&A session with us soon. I have my question ready for him now 😉

My anticipation is building for the Neil Young & Crazy Horse recording Psychedelic Pill.

Yesterday was also the Web première for “Walk Like A Giant”. It’s the first official video from Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Psyche!

The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved, An Interpretation of Hunter S. Thompson

I am a fan of Hunter S. Thompson‘s gonzo journalism. The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved by Hunter S. Thompson’s first appeared in Scanlan’s Monthly in June, 1970. It is considered by many to be Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo journalism début (but one could argue that The Rum Diary (1961), which thankfully Johnny Depp resurrected for us on the screen was the origin of Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo journalism).

The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved brought us the first collaboration of Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman, solidifying the foundation between the gonzo journalist and the crazed illustrations that forever captured our visual imaginations.

Kentucky Derby

I came across a recent audio work project, The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved produced by Hal Willner, featuring the talents of Bill Frisell, Tim Robbins, Dr. John, singer Annie Ross and Ralph Steadman.  This was due to a splendid article by Geoffrey Himes about Bill Frisell, Fear and Composing in the August issue of JazzTimes.

Bill Frisell is a brilliant creative/artistic musician who is always working on multiple project initiatives. He composed a well-articulated soundtrack for the backdrop of this inventive work. He draws us in with his sonic leanings keeping us ever focused on the unfolding narrative.

Tim Robbins performs a very skilful reading as Hunter S. Thompson. He has Hunter’s voice, intonation and controlled zaniness down pat.

Set aside some quality time and give  The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved a listen on Spotify.
