I’m looking forward to a new biography due to release on November 15, 2016. ‘Bear: The Life and Times Of Augustus Owsley Stanley III’  written by Robert Greenfield, a music author/journalist I deeply respect.
First-hand reflections from Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia are included in the book which comes from the author of Dark Star: An Oral History Of Jerry Garcia. Greenfield also penned Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones and collaborated with impresario Bill Graham on Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out.
Augustus Owsley Stanley III, better known by his nickname, Bear, was one of the most iconic figures in the cultural revolution that changed both America and the world during the 1960s.
Owsley’s high-octane rocket fuel enabled Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters to put on the Acid Tests. It also powered much of what happened on stage at Monterey Pop. Owsley turned on Pete Townshend of The Who and Jimi Hendrix. The shipment of LSD that Owsley sent John Lennon resulted in The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour album and film.
Convinced that the Grateful Dead were destined to become the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band, Owsley provided the money that kept them going during their early days. As their longtime soundman, he then faithfully recorded many of the Dead’s greatest live performances and designed the massive space age system that came to be known as the Wall of Sound.

A Conversation With George Clinton – May 12, 2015
A major event during the Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York, May 1-31, 2015 is A Conversation With George Clinton.  This event, being held at the Brooklyn Museum on May 12th, 2015. It requires a paid ticket to attend. This event is 18 and over.
Music as we know it would look a lot different (and less colorful) without the contributions of George Clinton. From his early musical beginnings in doo wop and as a songwriter at Motown, the hugely prolific Clinton went on to form the bands Parliament and Funkadelic, two of the most important groups of the 1970s. With Clinton at the helm of their Mothership, they uprooted funk from its earthly origins, sending it into outer space. Having made P-Funk a household name, Clinton went on to build an impressive solo discography, all the while inspiring a legion of West Coast rap artists and holding the reins of a sensational band called the P-Funk All Stars. As part of the Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York, George Clinton will sit down on the lecture couch for a rare, intimate chat about his momentous life and career.
I wonder if George Clinton will be selling and signing copies of his book that evening?

The vaults of the Grateful Dead bring forth many wonderful, sonic treasures. The latest music data mining to reach the surface is Spring 1990 (The Other One), a 23 disc box set, available on September 9, 2014.
The box set chronicles eight complete concerts from the group’s three-week 25th anniversary tour of North America. The price tag for this box is $239.98, too rich for my blood.
I am more inclined to order the 3 CD box,  Wake Up to Find Out 3/29/90 at $29.98. Wake Up To Find Out is the official début of one of the most sought-after shows in the Dead canon: the March 29, 1990 show at Nassau Coliseum, where Grammy®-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis sat in with the group. It has the sought after Marsalis jam with The Dead, “Estimated Prophet”.

Sunshine Daydream, Veneta, Oregon – 8/27/1972
The August 2013 Grateful Dead Bulletin contained a wonderful surprise. A limited edition box set entitled, Sunshine Daydream DeluxeCD/Blu-ray (Exclusive).Â
On August 27, 1972, fresh off their now-legendary European tour, the Grateful Dead traveled to Veneta, OR and reunited with the Merry Pranksters for a common cause – to throw a benefit concert for the Kesey family’s Springfield Creamery. A stage was erected under the hot Oregon sun at the Olde Renaissance Fairgrounds, tickets were printed on the fronts of the Creamery’s yogurt labels, and the rest is history…
The Dead in collaboration with Rolling Stone Magazine are featuring a video clip  (click on image of Jerry Garcia below to view). from the Sunshine Daydream movie that was shown this past Wednesday August 1st at select movie theaters in celebration of Jerry Garcia’s 71st birthday. This was the 3rd annual Grateful Dead Meet Up at The Movies.
I have to tell you I watched this clip and I was immediately transported back in time to the early 70’s when I first experienced the Grateful Dead live in concert (November 7, 1970 The Capitol Theatre in Portchester, NY and July 31, 1971 at Yale Bowl in New Haven). The movie captures The Grateful Dead just as I recalled seeing them live.
I was hooked when I saw that RS/Dead “Jack Straw” clip I pre-ordered right then and there. It has everything I want, The Grateful Dead live outdoors, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters (who filmed the movie) and Deadheads dancing and twirling in the hot sun.
The version of “Jack Straw” that they perform is beautifully done. I’ve never heard that song sound as sweet as this rendition.
The opening scene with the baby and the dog is cute and touching.
