The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a breathtaking exhibit on display for those who love guitars. Guitar Heroes, Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York is viewable from February 9th – July 4th, 2011. Read the NY Times review to learn more.
I think its time we get that museum membership and get down to the Museum Mile to experience this well crafted and curated exhibit.
Rosemary and I saw the Guitar Heroes exhibit yesterday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I have to tell you it was beautifully done. Each Italian American luthier created wonderful musical pieces of art with the instruments they hand crafted.
We saw mandolins, harp guitars, lyres, and some of the most exquisite guitars known to man. Each of the three guitar heroes had a unique signature to their art.
I marveled at the woods they used, the lacquered finishes, the pearl inlay fret boards. The attention to detail was magnificent.
My favorite luthier was John Monteleone. I can’t do justice to what I witnessed in the glass cases of his but let me say that it was a feast for the eyes and the senses.
I would love to hear each guitar heroes musical instruments performed in person. I am thinking of going back to see and hear these exquisite crafted instruments in performance.
I recommend the Met Guitar App for the Apple iPhone. It prepared me for this exhibit well and now I have that app to embellish what I witnessed. The app is available here, http://goo.gl/C1Y07
Rosemary and I went to the Petrie Court Cafe and Wine Bar after the Guitar Heroes exhibit. We were treated to a jazz trio playing for us while we had dinner and wine with a beautiful view of Central Park West behind the jazz musicians. A nice way to celebrate a very nice day in New York City.
